About Jambalaya Group
Jambalaya Group is not your typical consulting firm—and we like it that way.
For more than 25 years, we have helped financial advisory practices build stronger businesses through consulting, coaching, training, and hands-on implementation. We recently transitioned to new ownership and are in a significant growth phase, building on a strong foundation while continuing to evolve how we serve our clients, develop our team, and grow our business.
We are a highly collaborative team that believes great consulting requires both strategy and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get the work done. We think deeply, move quickly, care about the details, and build meaningful relationships with our clients. Excellence matters to us, but we also believe doing great work should be fun.
Our values shape how we work:
- Act with Intention. Start with insight. Lead with purpose.
- Care Deeply. Build meaningful relationships and cultivate genuine connections.
- Make It Fun or Make It Stop. Energy, humor, and joy are part of how we win.
- Be Bold. Build bridges. Be resilient. Reinvent.
- Be Aggressively Authentic. Be real. Speak real. We are what we consistently do.
We are looking for people who connect with those values—not just people who can recite them.
Jambalaya is growing quickly. That creates tremendous opportunity—and it also means things move fast.
We collaborate constantly. We change course when new information tells us we should. We expect people to bring ideas forward, challenge thinking respectfully, help one another, and jump in when something needs to get done.
We’re serious about the quality of our work without believing we have to be serious all the time.
If you enjoy building relationships, solving people problems, thinking strategically, getting your hands dirty, learning constantly, and working with a team that cares deeply about both its clients and one another, you may feel very at home here.
Position purpose
The People and Culture Generalist delivers practical HR support to Jambalaya Group’s clients. The initial focus is completing compensation and benefits research, role descriptions, employee handbooks, career development materials, and responsive support for day-to-day employee and workplace questions.
The position works closely with the Head of Human Capital to understand client needs, prepare recommendations and deliverables, and coordinate implementation. Relationship building, careful listening, sound judgment, and dependable follow-through are central to the role.
As experience and familiarity with Jambalaya Group’s consulting approach develop, the specialist will assume greater responsibility for supporting smaller fractional HR engagements. The position also provides backup to the recruiting team.
Primary responsibilities
- Compensation support: Research market compensation, identify comparable positions, document sources and assumptions, and prepare salary comparisons and draft recommendations for review.
- Benefits support: Gather and compare benefits information, assist with benefits-related client questions and employee communications, and coordinate follow-up with benefits providers or other resources as needed.
- Role descriptions and organizational clarity: Gather information about client positions and develop responsibilities, qualifications, reporting relationships, and measures of success.
- Employee handbooks and policies: Prepare and update handbook and policy drafts using approved resources, organize client input, maintain version control, and coordinate review and implementation.
- Career development: Develop career progression materials, employee development plans, and tools that help managers clarify expectations and support growth.
- Performance management: Prepare review forms and manager resources, coordinate review processes, and support documentation and follow-through on performance and development discussions.
- Reactive HR support: Respond to incoming client questions, clarify the underlying issue, gather relevant information, and prepare practical responses or recommended next steps with appropriate guidance.
- Employee relations support: Listen objectively to employee and manager concerns, document information, and assist with routine workplace matters. Escalate sensitive or complex situations to the Head of Human Capital.
- Process improvement: Continuously improve our HR consulting by developing reusable templates, tools, checklists, and processes that strengthen quality, consistency, and efficiency. Use AI thoughtfully and confidently for research, brainstorming, drafting, synthesis, and recommendations while applying professional judgment and maintaining confidentiality.
- HR implementation: Prepare onboarding, offboarding, and employee communication materials and help clients implement agreed HR processes.
- Client and project coordination: Maintain action plans, meeting notes, deadlines, and deliverables. Keep clients and teammates informed, follow up on outstanding information, and flag competing priorities.
- Recruiting backup: Support sourcing, résumé review, initial screening, interview coordination, candidate communication, and applicant tracking during absences or increased demand.
- Fractional HR support: Progressively assist with smaller client engagements by maintaining HR action plans, participating in client meetings, coordinating deliverables, and handling routine follow-up.
How You Will Work
This position owns assigned work, client follow-through, and routine communication within established processes. The Head of People and Culture will provide direction, coaching, and support and will remain involved in substantive recommendations, complex policy questions, and sensitive employee matters.
We are looking for someone who can take direction and then use discernment.
Different clients may bring us similar questions but require very different approaches. Success in this role requires understanding the intent behind the direction you receive, considering the specific client and circumstances, and determining how to move the work forward appropriately.
As you learn the role, the expectation is increasing independence. We value people who take initiative, anticipate what comes next, ask for help when it is needed, and don’t require someone else to manage every step of their work.
How Success Will Be Measured
- Consulting & Judgment: You listen before solving, understand the business and people context, and develop thoughtful, practical recommendations appropriate to each client.
- Client Relationships: Clients trust you, feel heard, and receive clear, responsive, professional guidance.
- Work Quality: Your research, documents, presentations, recommendations, and other deliverables are accurate, thoughtful, polished, and appropriate to the client’s needs.
- Execution: You own commitments and complete them on agreed timelines. Dependencies, competing priorities, and potential delays are raised early—not after a deadline has passed.
- Responsiveness: Incoming HR needs are acknowledged, prioritized, and moved toward resolution or appropriate escalation.
- Managing Complexity: You can successfully juggle multiple clients, projects, personalities, deadlines, and priorities without losing sight of important details.
- Initiative & Ownership: As you learn the role, you become increasingly self-managing, anticipate next steps, identify opportunities to improve the work, and take responsibility for moving things forward.
- Relationships & Communication: Clients and teammates experience you as approachable, thoughtful, clear, respectful, and authentic.
- Growth: You actively seek feedback, continue developing your HR and consulting capabilities, and take on increasing responsibility as your readiness develops.
- 3–5 years of HR experience, with exposure and hands-on experience across several areas including compensation, benefits, employee policies and handbooks, performance management, employee relations, and recruiting.
- A consulting mindset and the ability to work with multiple clients simultaneously, listen carefully, ask strong questions, assess what is needed, and provide sound recommendations.
- Strong judgment and discernment, including the ability to take direction, understand the desired outcome, and adapt the approach appropriately to different clients and situations.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with business owners, leaders, employees, and teammates with different personalities, perspectives, and communication styles.
- Business acumen and an interest in understanding how people decisions connect to organizational structure, capacity, growth, leadership, and business performance.
- Comfort with ambiguity and problem-solving. Not every client issue arrives neatly defined, and you should enjoy helping make sense of what is happening and determining a path forward.
- Clear, confident written and verbal communication and the ability to turn complex information into understandable recommendations and practical next steps.
- Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines, and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Initiative and self-management. Once trained, you see what needs to happen, take ownership, follow through, and raise your hand early when something needs attention.
- The ability to take feedback and direction well, adjust quickly, and continue learning without becoming defensive.
- Discretion with confidential information and good judgment about when to independently move something forward and when to seek additional guidance.
- Experience with Microsoft 365, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Genuine enthusiasm for using AI as part of how you work, with experience using AI tools to improve thinking, research, drafting, presentations, recommendations, templates, and efficiency.
- Energy, adaptability, curiosity, and a genuine interest in people.
Preferred experience includes:
Experience with Salesforce; experience supporting small businesses, professional services organizations, or financial advisory practices; and experience working directly with business owners or leaders in an advisory or consultative capacity.
