The Mathematical Institute (MI) of Leiden University and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are looking for a PhD Candidate in Complex Networks to commence at the earliest possible date and no later than April 2027.
The project investigates how structural properties observed in complex networks can be understood and modeled using mathematically tractable network models. The research will combine theoretical modeling with computational and data-driven investigation of real-world networks, with a particular emphasis on understanding how features such as spatial structure, clustering, heterogeneity, and connectivity shape network behavior.
Possible research directions include, but are not limited to, network science, spatial network modeling, random graph models, and data-driven methods for network analysis. We welcome candidates with an interest in real-world network data as well as in developing and analyzing mathematical models of complex networks. The precise balance between theoretical, computational, and data-driven work will depend on the candidate’s background and interests.
The position will be co-supervised by dr. Moritz Otto (MI) and dr. Akrati Saxena (LIACS). Michel Mandjes (MI) will act as promotor. Academic excellence is the main selection criterion.
What you will do
-
Conducting complex networks research at the intersection of mathematics and computer science.
-
Writing a publication-based PhD thesis.
-
Engaging in a limited number of teaching and supervision activities.
Where you will work
Both the research groups and the institutes are highly international and feature a mix of disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. There are plenty of additional opportunities for other types of interaction and collaboration, for example, at the Faculty of Science through the Leiden Complex Networks Network (LCN2) and nationally through the Dutch Network Science Society.
What you bring
- A university degree* in mathematics, computer science or a closely related field.
- Knowledge in an area of research related to network science/complex networks, e.g., graph theory, probability, random graphs, complex systems, or topological data analysis.
- Programming experience, preferably in Python, and willingness to develop strong computational skills (please mention your level of proficiency and knowledge of other programming languages in your CV).
- Strong motivation for academic research.
- Good English communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and in a team.
- You live and are officially registered as resident in The Netherlands or are willing to relocate upon starting the position.
*Candidates who expect to complete their Master’s degree by early spring 2027 are also encouraged to apply.
What we offer
-
We offer a full-time position for initially one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the thesis, personal capabilities and compatibility, the appointment will be extended by a further three years.
-
A salary starting from € 3.204,= to € 4.051,= gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours, Payscale P)
-
A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
-
Full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs for home-to-work travel;
-
Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours;
- Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription and bicycle scheme;
-
If your work allows it, hybrid working is possible within the Netherlands;
-
A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop and a mobile telephone.
What we value
Promoting an inclusive community is central to Leiden University’s values and vision. We strive to be an open community in which all students and staff members feel valued and respected, and are able to fully develop themselves. We consider an inclusive academic environment, where students and staff can share their experiences and viewpoints, to be essential for the development of talent.
