Job Description - Planning Technician I (55782) Job Description Planning Technician I 11 months Job Number : 55782 Join our team in shaping the future of Edmonton’s urban landscape. We are looking for a collaborative professional to support land development processes and ensure vibrant, well-planned communities. As a Planning Technician I, you will deliver vital planning services by reviewing and rendering decisions on minor development permit applications. Working within a dynamic team, you will guide applicants through zoning requirements, resolve inquiries, and write reports for appeal hearings. This role plays a key part in fostering safe, sustainable, and orderly growth across our city. What will you do? Review, evaluate, and render decisions on minor development permit applications (such as backyard housing, single/semi-detached homes, and temporary signage) following the Zoning Bylaw and Municipal Government Act Process requests for compliance certificates, curb crossing permits, and encroachment agreements in coordination with internal departments Research zoning clearances for business licenses and ensure alignment with municipal policies and land use plans Prepare written reports and represent decisions at Subdivision and Development Appeal Board hearings when required Respond to inquiries from engagement participants, industry professionals, and community partners via phone, email, 311 referrals, and in-person visits Provide preliminary file analysis and technical support to Planners on major development applications Qualifications : Two-year technical diploma in planning, architecture, or landscape architecture (with a preference for planning or architecture) from a recognized post-secondary institution Minimum of 2 years of directly related employment in the planning or architectural technical field Assets Experience using municipal development software, such as POSSE, and Google Workspace applications Skills required for success Interpretation of blueprints, site plans, building elevations, floor plans, landscape designs, and Real Property Reports Application of municipal zoning bylaws, statutory plans (ASPs, NSPs, ARPs), and the Municipal Government Act Clear and concise written and verbal communication for diverse technical and non-technical audiences Strong conflict resolution, negotiation, and problem-solving skills when addressing complex land-use inquiries Effective time management and task prioritization in a fast-paced, high-volume environment Sound decision-making rooted in consistency, impartiality, and sound judgment Professionalism and diplomacy when interacting with land developers, consultants, and engagement participants Independence in managing daily caseloads while working cohesively within a multi-functional team Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( https://bit.ly/4brRrXm ) Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion Conditions of Employment Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement Applicants may be tested Work Environment This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52 The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
