Practice Manager

Fully Remote

£35,000 - £42,000 + Bonus

Are you an experienced accountancy practice professional who combines strong technical knowledge with the confidence to lead a remote team, manage workflow and maintain consistently high standards? Would you enjoy taking ownership of the delivery side of a growing practice, with the freedom to improve how work gets done?

Our client is an established and growing UK accountancy, bookkeeping and tax practice supporting predominantly owner-managed businesses. With a fully remote team and well-developed systems already in place, the practice is now looking for a hands-on Practice Manager to lead day-to-day delivery and help shape its next stage of growth.

This is a pivotal role with a direct working relationship with the Director. You will oversee workflow and deadlines, review work before it reaches clients, lead technical and compliance meetings and support the continued development of the team. You will inherit organised processes and receive a comprehensive handover, while bringing the judgement and initiative to identify sensible improvements over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the practice workflow, allocating work, balancing capacity and ensuring all VAT, payroll, CIS, year-end accounts, corporation tax and self-assessment deadlines are met.
  • Review bookkeeping, VAT returns, management accounts, year-end accounts and corporation tax computations before they are issued or filed.
  • Prepare and finalise accounts and tax returns for more complex clients when required, maintaining high standards of working papers, file structure and review notes.
  • Line manage a small remote team of bookkeepers and junior staff through regular check-ins, workload planning, coaching, training and development.
  • Run a focused weekly team meeting covering priorities, capacity and upcoming deadlines.
  • Lead client meetings on year-end results, tax positions and compliance matters, acting as the day-to-day contact for larger clients and explaining technical information clearly.
  • Manage HMRC correspondence and enquiries, and keep client onboarding, engagement letters and AML checks up to date.
  • Improve efficiency through practical templates, checklists and automation across Xero, Dext and related systems, documenting procedures so work remains consistent.
  • Report to the Director on work in progress, deadlines, team capacity and client issues.

Skills & Experience

  • You will already have worked at a suitably senior or supervisory level within a UK accountancy practice and be comfortable taking responsibility for both technical quality and people. ACCA, ACA or CIMA qualified, or AAT Level 4 with significant and relevant accountancy practice experience.
  • At least three years’ recent experience within a UK accountancy practice, including reviewing work completed by others.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK VAT, corporation tax, PAYE, CIS and self-assessment. Experience supporting construction-sector clients would be particularly useful.
  • Previous responsibility for supervising or managing at least one colleague, with the confidence to set priorities, give feedback and support development.
  • Experience leading client meetings and communicating financial or tax matters clearly to non-finance audiences.
  • Strong working knowledge of Xero and Dext, together with the ability and willingness to learn connected systems independently.
  • Excellent organisation, sound judgement and a dependable, deadline-focused approach.
  • A reliable home-working setup and the ability to work UK hours, normally 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Experience of remote team leadership, management accounts, cashflow forecasting, practice management software, process automation or solicitors’ client accounts and the SRA Accounts Rules would be advantageous but isn't essential.

The role offers a salary of £35,000 to £42,000 depending on experience and location, twice-yearly bonus opportunities, a standard holiday allowance, fully remote working and flexibility within UK working hours. You will work closely with the Director of a growing practice and have genuine scope to influence its processes, standards and future development. Apply now!
