We are looking for an experienced Principal ICT Systems Technician to join a high-profile, mission-critical technology project based in The Hague in hybrid working model.


The successful candidate will work as an integrated member of a dedicated service operations team, providing advanced technical support across ICT systems, network infrastructure, software configuration, system deployment, and operational environments.


The role combines hands-on technical responsibilities with Level 2 operational support, requiring strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills. The position also includes participation in an on-call rotation, supporting operational services and ensuring timely ticket response and resolution in line with defined Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the configuration, implementation, maintenance and deployment of ICT systems, software and infrastructure within a complex operational environment.
  • Assist in designing, verifying, documenting, amending and refactoring moderately complex software configurations, applying established technical standards, methodologies and tools.
  • Monitor system performance, resource utilisation and failure rates, and configure system software parameters to optimise throughput, availability and efficiency.
  • Install, configure, test and maintain system software, upgrades, patches and technical changes in accordance with established procedures and implementation plans.
  • Analyse system logs, performance data and operational information to identify issues, support troubleshooting and contribute to root-cause analysis.
  • Perform network maintenance, configuration and troubleshooting activities across technologies including TCP/IP, VPN, VLAN, DNS and firewalls.
  • Use network management, monitoring and diagnostic tools to collect and analyse performance, traffic and operational data and support the resolution of network issues.
  • Install, configure, test and remove hardware and software components using approved procedures, installation instructions and diagnostic tools.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, system and installation-related issues, ensuring that all activities, configurations and results are accurately documented and recorded.
  • Provide technical assistance to users, follow established support and escalation procedures, and contribute to the continuous improvement of installation procedures, technical standards and operational documentation.
  • Execute approved software and system deployment, release, upgrade and change activities using established tools and methodologies, ensuring that all technical activities and outcomes are properly recorded and traceable.
  • Provide 24/7 immediate on-call Level 2 technical support as part of a defined service operations rotation, responding promptly to incidents, service requests and technical tickets.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex ICT and operational issues within defined SLAs and KPIs, escalating unresolved or high-impact incidents to the appropriate specialist or engineering teams.
  • Work closely with service operations, engineering and technical teams to minimise service disruption and ensure the reliable delivery of operational ICT services.
  • When not assigned to on-call duties, work as an on-site integrated member of the assigned service team, providing hands-on technical support and contributing to day-to-day service operations.


Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Higher vocational qualification in a relevant technical discipline with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience, or a secondary education qualification with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience implementing and maintaining ICT end-user systems within a large-scale organisation.
  • Solid experience configuring and maintaining hardware and software.
  • Strong understanding of ICT systems and infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and troubleshoot technical problems effectively.
  • Hands-on experience diagnosing technical issues and providing technical support to end-users.
  • Experience working in structured service operations or enterprise IT environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to operational incidents within defined timeframes.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call support rotation.


Desirable Skills & Experience:

The following experience would be considered an advantage:

  • Network configuration and troubleshooting, including:

TCP/IP, VPN, VLAN, firewall technologies, DNS

  • Practical understanding of cybersecurity infrastructure and security principles.
  • Experience with software development or scripting using Java, C, C++, Python or other scripting languages.
  • Experience configuring server hosting platforms.
  • Experience with custom disk configurations and storage controllers.
  • Knowledge of RAID configurations and redundancy management.
  • Experience with remote server administration.
  • Strong log analysis capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience using network analysis and diagnostic tools such as Wireshark.
  • Experience supporting complex, distributed or mission-critical ICT environments.
  • ITIL Foundation or advanced-level training and certification.

Due to the nature of the project and the systems involved, the successful candidate will be required to undergo the applicable personnel security clearance and background screening process prior to assignment.
