Show job description

Build a privacy function from the ground up in a global technology business.

We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on Privacy & Data Governance Lead to establish and manage the privacy function for a global technology company delivering secure email services to millions of users worldwide.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a developing privacy program, establish practical frameworks and controls, and work closely with Product, Engineering and senior stakeholders to embed privacy into everyday business operations.

We're looking for a genuine privacy practitioner – someone who enjoys implementing solutions, not simply advising on legislation or writing policies.

The Opportunity

Reporting into the Compliance & Trust function, you'll be responsible for:

  • Establishing and managing the privacy program, including frameworks, processes and operating procedures.
  • Developing and maintaining Records of Processing Activities (ROPA) and data maps.
  • Conducting Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), DPIAs and identifying privacy risks across products, systems and vendors.
  • Implementing data governance practices covering data ownership, classification, retention and deletion.
  • Working with Product and Engineering teams to embed practical privacy controls into technology platforms and workflows.
  • Assessing privacy risks associated with emerging technologies, including AI tools handling personal information.
  • Supporting privacy compliance, incident response and regulatory obligations.
  • Collaborating with an outsourced European Data Protection Officer (DPO) and stakeholders across the business.

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated experience as a hands-on privacy practitioner, managing or significantly contributing to operational privacy programmes.
  • Strong practical knowledge of the Australian Privacy Act and its application in a business environment.
  • Proven experience establishing or improving privacy frameworks, processes and controls.
  • Hands-on experience developing or maintaining ROPA, data maps and conducting DPIAs.
  • Experience implementing data governance practices and privacy controls.
  • Sufficient technical understanding of cloud environments, data flows and security controls to work effectively with Engineering teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.
  • A proactive, independent working style and the ability to take ownership in a lean, distributed environment.

Highly Regarded

  • Experience in SaaS, technology, telecommunications or other data-intensive businesses.
  • Knowledge of GDPR or experience supporting GDPR-alignment programmes.
  • Experience with international data transfers and privacy risk assessments.
  • Privacy certifications such as CIPP, CIPM or equivalent.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is not a traditional compliance or legal advisory position. You'll have the opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up, shape how privacy operates across a global technology business and make a tangible impact on how personal information is managed and protected.

You'll enjoy the flexibility of working remotely from Australia while collaborating with a global team of technology professionals.

If you're a practical, delivery-focused privacy professional who enjoys building frameworks, solving problems and making privacy work in the real world, we'd love to hear from you.
