Regular Software Engineer

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

• At least three years of commercial experience in C# and .NET

• Hands-on experience with both .NET Framework (4.x) and modern .NET (8+), and an understanding of what changes when you move code between them

• Strong SQL skills with SQL Server: writing and reading stored procedures, T-SQL, indexes, transactions and locking

• Experience with ADO.NET data access (SqlClient, DataSets, parameterised queries), not only Entity Framework

• Experience building and consuming web services, both SOAP/WCF and RESTful APIs in ASP.NET Core Web API

• Experience with background processing: Windows Services, scheduled jobs or workers, and the concurrency problems they bring (multiple instances, idempotency)

• Solid object-oriented design and familiarity with Dependency Injection and async patterns

• Ability to write unit-testable code, and experience writing unit and integration tests (xUnit/NUnit/MSTest)

• Working knowledge of Git and pull-request-based workflows

• Experience using AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or similar), and the discipline to review and verify what they produce

• NICE TO HAVE:

• PostgreSQL experience, especially migrating schema or T-SQL from SQL Server to PostgreSQL

• Microsoft Azure: App Service, Azure Functions, Key Vault, managed identity, Azure Database for PostgreSQL

• Setting up CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps) with build and test gates

• Characterization, regression, or contract testing on legacy systems

• Multi-tenant application design, row-level security, or role-based access control

• Some exposure to WPF/XAML or a modern web front end (React, Angular)

• Experience in transport, logistics, or other operational/ERP domains

SOFT SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

• Fluent English, spoken and written. You will work daily with the client's UK-based team

• Comfortable reading and changing large, unfamiliar legacy code without rewriting what already works

• Careful and methodical with production data, credentials and anything security-related

• Able to follow a specification, and to raise it when the code tells a different story from the spec

• Works well inside a mixed Wiser and client team and communicates progress and blockers early

• Willing to learn and share knowledge within the team
