We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Autodesk Inventor Specialists with strong expertise in parametric 3D CAD modelling, GD&T, design for manufacturability, assembly-level mechanical design, technical drawing interpretation, reverse engineering, and CAD automation to contribute to an advanced AI training and engineering-data project.

Selected professionals will develop, edit, audit, and document fully parametric mechanical models based on detailed technical requirements, applying professional CAD standards and real-world manufacturing knowledge. Although Autodesk Inventor expertise is especially relevant, the project itself will focus on FreeCAD, making transferable experience across parametric CAD platforms highly valuable. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities

Parametric CAD Modelling

  • Develop fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Build models from detailed written briefs and engineering requirements
  • Apply robust sketching, dimensional constraints, and feature-tree practices
  • Ensure models remain editable, stable, and adaptable as requirements change
  • Maintain clear design intent throughout complex modelling workflows

Model Editing & Assembly-Level Design

  • Edit and update existing parametric models to reflect revised specifications
  • Preserve model integrity while incorporating design changes
  • Work with complex assemblies in addition to individual components
  • Manage mechanical relationships, constraints, and dependencies across assemblies
  • Diagnose and resolve fragile features, broken references, and modelling inconsistencies

GD&T & Technical Drawings

  • Create and interpret detailed technical drawings
  • Apply GD&T principles consistent with ASME Y14.5 or equivalent standards
  • Evaluate dimensions, tolerances, datum structures, and geometric controls
  • Review drawings for consistency with design intent and manufactured geometry
  • Identify dimensional or tolerance issues requiring correction

Design for Manufacturability

  • Apply DFM principles across relevant manufacturing processes
  • Consider injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, casting, and forging
  • Identify geometry that may create unnecessary manufacturing complexity or cost
  • Evaluate whether designs are appropriate for intended production methods
  • Recommend modifications that improve manufacturability while preserving design intent

CAD Auditing & Quality Assurance

  • Audit CAD models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance compliance, and manufacturability
  • Identify gaps, deviations, modelling errors, or incomplete requirements
  • Review feature structures and assembly relationships for robustness
  • Document issues clearly and recommend practical corrective actions
  • Maintain consistent quality standards across model creation and editing tasks

Reverse Engineering & CAD Automation

  • Support scan-to-CAD and point-cloud-to-model reconstruction workflows
  • Translate existing geometry into structured parametric models
  • Apply CAD automation or scripting to improve workflow efficiency
  • Use tools such as Python, iLogic, VBA, NX Open, or comparable technologies where appropriate
  • Help standardise repetitive modelling, validation, and documentation processes

Ideal Profile

  • Minimum of approximately 4 years of hands-on parametric CAD experience for model-editing assignments
  • Approximately 10+ years of relevant experience may be appropriate for complex model-creation work
  • Strong expertise in Autodesk Inventor
  • Experience with FreeCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or comparable parametric CAD platforms is highly relevant
  • Prior FreeCAD experience is ideal, as the project itself will focus on FreeCAD
  • Demonstrated practical experience with GD&T and ASME Y14.5 or equivalent standards
  • Strong DFM expertise across at least 2–3 manufacturing processes
  • Experience with injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC machining, casting, forging, or comparable processes
  • Strong assembly-level modelling skills
  • Experience with technical drawing interpretation and mechanical design documentation
  • Reverse-engineering experience involving scan-to-CAD or point-cloud reconstruction is highly valued
  • Familiarity with CAD automation and scripting using Python, iLogic, VBA, NX Open, or similar tools is advantageous
  • Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication
  • No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required

Engagement Details

  • Independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Compensation: $30–$100/hour
  • Work will involve parametric CAD modelling, model editing, technical drawing interpretation, CAD auditing, GD&T, DFM, assembly design, and engineering documentation
  • The project will primarily use FreeCAD, while strong Autodesk Inventor and transferable parametric CAD expertise are highly relevant
  • Assignments may involve mechanical part creation, assembly modelling, reverse engineering, manufacturing review, and CAD automation
  • Experience requirements may vary depending on task complexity, particularly between model-editing and advanced model-creation assignments
  • Project scope, workload, modelling requirements, and quality standards may evolve depending on project needs
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
