Remote | SolidWorks Specialist — $40–$100/hour
24-MAGWe are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced SolidWorks Specialists with strong expertise in parametric CAD modelling, GD&T, design for manufacturability, mechanical design, assembly modelling, CAD auditing, and technical documentation to contribute to an advanced AI training and engineering-data project.
Selected professionals will create, edit, audit, and document fully parametric mechanical models based on detailed technical requirements, applying professional CAD practices and real-world manufacturing knowledge. Although SolidWorks expertise is especially relevant, the project itself will focus on FreeCAD, making transferable parametric-modelling experience highly valuable. No prior experience in AI is required.
Key Responsibilities
Parametric CAD Modelling
- Create fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies
- Build models from written briefs and detailed engineering requirements
- Apply robust feature-tree structures, dimensions, constraints, and design intent
- Ensure models remain editable, stable, and adaptable as requirements evolve
- Maintain high standards for geometry quality and modelling consistency
CAD Editing & Feature-Tree Management
- Edit and update existing parametric CAD models to reflect revised technical requirements
- Preserve model integrity while incorporating design changes
- Manage complex feature trees and dependent geometry
- Diagnose unstable features, broken references, or problematic modelling sequences
- Document modifications clearly and consistently
GD&T, Tolerances & Manufacturability
- Apply GD&T principles consistent with ASME Y14.5 or equivalent standards
- Review dimensions, tolerances, datums, and geometric controls
- Evaluate models for manufacturing feasibility and production readiness
- Identify tolerance or geometry choices that may create downstream manufacturing issues
- Maintain alignment between design intent and manufacturing requirements
Design for Manufacturability
- Apply DFM principles across multiple manufacturing processes
- Evaluate designs for injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, casting, and forging
- Identify opportunities to simplify manufacturing or improve production robustness
- Recommend design adjustments that preserve function while improving manufacturability
- Apply practical manufacturing knowledge throughout modelling and review workflows
Assembly Modelling & Mechanical Design
- Develop and review assembly-level CAD models
- Manage mechanical relationships, interfaces, and component constraints
- Evaluate assemblies for fit, function, and design consistency
- Support complex mechanical systems rather than exclusively single-part modelling
- Apply strong spatial reasoning and mechanical-design judgement
CAD Auditing, Reverse Engineering & Automation
- Audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, design intent, and manufacturability
- Support reverse-engineering workflows such as scan-to-CAD and point-cloud conversion
- Translate existing geometry into structured parametric models
- Apply CAD automation or scripting using Python, iLogic, VBA, or comparable tools where relevant
- Help standardise modelling, validation, and documentation workflows
Ideal Profile
- 4+ years of hands-on parametric CAD experience for model-editing assignments
- Approximately 10+ years of relevant experience may be appropriate for complex assembly-creation work
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks
- Experience with FreeCAD, Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or comparable parametric CAD systems is highly relevant
- Prior FreeCAD experience is ideal, as the project itself will focus on FreeCAD
- Practical experience applying GD&T in real-world manufacturing environments
- Strong DFM expertise across at least two manufacturing processes
- Experience with injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC machining, casting, forging, or comparable production methods
- Current or recent involvement in mechanical or industrial CAD modelling
- Strong assembly-level modelling experience
- Experience with CAD model auditing and tolerance application
- Reverse-engineering experience involving scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion is highly valued
- Familiarity with CAD automation or scripting using Python, iLogic, VBA, or similar tools is advantageous
- Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required
