About Lane Medical Library

Stanford University School of Medicine’s Lane Medical Library accelerates scientific discovery, clinical care, medical education and humanities through teaching, collaboration, and delivery of biomedical and historical resources. The library is a state-of-the-art medical library within the Medical Student Education group which supports Stanford Medical Center’s research, education, and patient care objectives. Lane Library supports its mission to accelerate scientific discovery in part by curating a collection of print and digital knowledge resources relevant to the in-depth research, graduate-level education, and clinical patient care performed by the Stanford Medicine community and its affiliated hospitals and clinics. We are proud of our rich history dating back to 1882.

About the Position

Lane Library, Stanford Medicine seeks a Resource Sharing Librarian. The position will assist library patrons (faculty, students, researchers, and other library users) in obtaining information resources. The Resource Sharing Librarian reports to the Manager of Access Services and performs and manages daily interlibrary loan and document delivery operations, coordinates the movement and management of materials in remote/offsite storage, staffs the information desk, and serves as a liaison to assigned subject areas, including the rare books collection. This role coordinates the work of the ILL/Document Delivery team. They will work closely with Lane staff units and other SOM stakeholders to develop services that are responsive to the needs of users and are sustainable for library staff.

This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.

Core Duties

  • Select library materials and information resources in a well-defined area, including responsibility for collection management and preservation decision-making.
  • Assist patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by searching shelves, files and electronic resources.
  • Catalog books, serial and government documents.
  • Make recommendations for the upgrade of electronic and manual resource tools.
  • Analyze the technical and access needs for a unit of the library system, including the environmental conditions of storage and work spaces.
  • Develop bibliographic and reference links.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations to management on plans, operations and policies for a library unit.
  • Provide donors with information on terms of donated collections.
  • Teach classes, lead tours and/or give demonstrations of library resources.
  • May approve and make arrangements for loaning repository items to external organizations for exhibit, including the negotiation terms of the loan.
  • May manage staff or student staff.

Required Education and Experience

Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant

experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in resource sharing and access services including interlibrary loan and document delivery, circulation services, and related library areas.
  • Knowledge of interlibrary loan / document delivery systems (e.g., Clio, Docline, WorldShare ILL), resource-sharing networks, and copyright as it applies to library lending.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills; accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience coordinating offsite / remote storage operations and shipments. Familiarity with the Caiasoft warehouse management system a plus.
  • Experience with automated library systems, content delivery platforms, and software products related to the responsibilities indicated for this position and the ability to learn and master new software, systems and technology, and to generate reports and work with data.
  • Experience providing reference and instruction services. Knowledge of rare book and archives collections a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Knowledge of academic health sciences, preferably including related subject expertise in the biosciences.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work and learn in a rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to work under pressure, tolerate ambiguity and manage competing priorities

Physical Requirements

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10
  • pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires

Working Conditions:

  • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
