Some accountants keep the books moving. This role helps mission-driven organizations move forward.
Missionwell partners with nonprofits that are doing meaningful work in their communities. We are looking for a remote senior financial leader who can bring order to complexity, build trust with executives and boards, and help an accounting team deliver excellent work. You will combine hands-on accounting leadership, Controller and fractional CFO support, business partner onboarding, and team development in one varied, high-impact role.
Why this role stands out
- Your work directly strengthens nonprofit organizations and the people they serve.
- You will move between detailed financial operations and strategic executive conversations.
- You will shape systems, controls, and team practices rather than simply inherit them.
- You will work in a collaborative remote environment with a laptop and internet allowance.
- You will have meaningful responsibility, visible impact, and room to grow with Missionwell.
What you will do
Business Partner Onboarding and Systems
- Lead the financial onboarding and setup of assigned business partners, including discovery, risk assessment, data transition, workflow design, system configuration, and handoff.
- Assess accounting systems, processes, controls, reporting needs, and staffing responsibilities; recommend practical improvements consistent with the engagement scope.
- Implement Missionwell standards, tools, documentation, and quality controls while adapting to each business partner’s requirements.
- Establish clear roles, deadlines, communication practices, escalation paths, and evidence of completion.
Accounting and Controller Services
- Lead or review accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash activity, general ledger, month-end close, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting for assigned business partners.
- Maintain accurate records and effective internal controls in accordance with GAAP, applicable nonprofit accounting guidance, grant requirements, and contractual obligations.
- Prepare and present timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, dashboards, forecasts, cash-flow analyses, and budget-to-actual reporting.
- Lead audit readiness and audit coordination, including schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, management responses, and resolution of findings.
- Oversee fund, grant, donor, and restriction accounting as applicable, and escalate material compliance, liquidity, control, or reporting risks promptly.
CFO and Strategic Advisory Services
- Serve as an assigned Controller, fractional CFO, or senior financial advisor for one or more business partners within the approved engagement scope.
- Partner with executives, leadership teams, and boards on budgets, forecasts, cash planning, financial strategy, risk, governance, and decision support.
- Explain complex financial information clearly to nonfinancial leaders and provide practical options, risks, and recommendations.
- Lead approved special projects such as financial restructuring, system implementations, policy development, financing support, tax coordination, and interim financial leadership.
Team Leadership and Service Quality
- Provide clear work direction, priorities, deadlines, review standards, and feedback to assigned team members.
- Coach and develop team members through regular check-ins, quality review, training, and individual development planning.
- Monitor workloads, service commitments, utilization, deadlines, and deliverable quality; address or escalate capacity and performance concerns promptly.
- Promote respectful, inclusive, and collaborative working relationships across remote teams and client environments.
What you bring
- Progressively responsible accounting and financial leadership experience sufficient to perform the essential functions independently. Missionwell anticipates that many qualified candidates will bring approximately 10 or more years of relevant experience, including Controller, CFO, accounting leadership, or comparable client-service responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience with financial statements, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, internal controls, audit support, and executive-level financial communication.
- Experience leading staff, projects, or cross-functional financial work, including setting expectations and reviewing deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and the ability to learn and apply nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, grant compliance, and donor-restriction requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines, exercise sound judgment, communicate risks early, and maintain confidentiality.
- Proficiency with common accounting, reporting, collaboration, and document-management technology; ability to learn Missionwell and business partner systems.
Helpful, but not required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and directly relevant experience.
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant credential.
- Experience serving nonprofit organizations, boards, grants, restricted funds, multi-entity environments, or outsourced accounting clients.
- Experience with system implementations, process standardization, automation, or interim financial leadership.
All Missionwell Staff Are Required To
- Maintain accurate project action items and status updates in Missionwell’s project management tools and complete timekeeping accurately and on time.
- Stay informed of organizational announcements, activities, and changes through Missionwell communication tools and participation in staff meetings.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
- Attend and participate in staff and team meetings as requested.
- Perform other accounting and finance duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Schedule
This is a full-time position. The employee must maintain a consistent work schedule as agreed upon with the supervisor.
Work Location and Technology Requirements
- This is a fully remote position. Occasional travel may be required.
- A dedicated, distraction-free workspace that provides privacy for confidential conversations and payroll work.
- Reliable high-speed internet access and the ability to work effectively and securely in a remote environment.

- Extended periods of sitting and working at a computer.
- Repetitive hand, arm, and finger movement when using a keyboard and mouse.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
