Senior AI/ML Engineer

NeatDevs LLC is a small federal subcontractor with a long-running seat on a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program in Ashburn, VA. We are hiring a Senior AI/ML Engineer for hands-on development on AI/ML prototyping teams - building GenAI features (RAG, tool calling, agents) on Google Gemini and integrating them into full stack applications on short delivery timelines. U.S. citizenship is required (federal contract); you must be able to obtain a DHS/CBP Public Trust - an active or recent clearance shortens your start date but is not a gate. Hybrid: on-site in Ashburn, VA about one day per week, remote the rest.

What you'll do

• Design and build custom software for AI/ML pilots, including Google Gemini-based capabilities
• Build GenAI features: RAG, prompt-driven workflows, tool/function calling, simple AI agents - and evaluate their outputs
• Develop full stack applications from Angular front ends to back-end services, APIs, and databases
• Work with data scientists to integrate models and move prototypes toward production
• Participate in code reviews and mentor less experienced developers

Required

• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DHS/CBP Public Trust; must live in the DC/MD/VA area
• Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science or related field
• 7+ years of professional software development, with recent hands-on AI/ML or GenAI application work
• Python plus Java/JavaScript/TypeScript; full stack experience including Angular
• Hands-on LLM application development: prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, model APIs
• SQL and NoSQL databases; secure RESTful API design

Nice to have

• Google Gemini / Vertex AI strongly preferred; Bedrock/SageMaker valued
• Agent frameworks (Google ADK, LangChain/LangGraph)
• GitLab CI/CD, Docker/Kubernetes

Pay and benefits

$127,000 - $146,000 per year depending on experience and clearance status. Full-time W-2 role with health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, 401(k), paid time off, and paid federal holidays.
