About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Senior Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Engineering Specialist to design, implement, optimize, and maintain resilient routing architectures across enterprise networks, data centers, cloud environments, and internet-facing infrastructure. The successful candidate will ensure reliable route exchange, network scalability, traffic engineering, and high availability across complex multi-provider and autonomous system environments.
This role requires deep expertise in BGP routing, route policy design, network troubleshooting, peering arrangements, and routing security. You will collaborate with network architecture, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and operations teams to improve routing performance, minimize outages, and maintain secure, predictable network connectivity.
Key Responsibilities- Design, implement, and maintain scalable BGP architectures across enterprise networks, data centers, cloud environments, and internet edge infrastructure.
- Configure and manage eBGP and iBGP sessions, route reflectors, autonomous system policies, and routing adjacencies.
- Develop routing policies using prefix lists, route maps, communities, AS-path filters, local preference, and Multi-Exit Discriminator (MED).
- Optimize inbound and outbound traffic flows through route selection, path manipulation, traffic engineering, and failover strategies.
- Monitor BGP session health, route convergence, prefix announcements, routing table changes, and network performance.
- Troubleshoot route leaks, route flapping, unstable adjacencies, incorrect advertisements, asymmetric routing, and reachability issues.
- Implement routing redundancy, multi-homing, provider failover, and resilient peering designs to maintain network availability.
- Apply routing security controls, including prefix filtering, maximum-prefix limits, peer validation, and Route Origin Authorization (ROA) and RPKI validation where supported.
- Coordinate with internet service providers, cloud providers, telecommunications carriers, and peering partners to resolve routing issues.
- Plan and execute routing changes, maintenance activities, software upgrades, and network migrations using controlled change management procedures.
- Analyze routing behavior using packet captures, router logs, telemetry, flow data, and network diagnostic tools.
- Integrate BGP with MPLS, EVPN, SD-WAN, VPNs, and data center routing architectures where applicable.
- Automate BGP configuration validation, routing policy checks, operational reporting, and network deployment tasks.
- Conduct network resilience testing, failover simulations, and route convergence assessments.
- Maintain network diagrams, routing policy documentation, IP address plans, configuration standards, and operational runbooks.
- Lead root-cause analysis for major routing incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Provide technical guidance to network engineers and recommend improvements to routing architecture, scalability, and reliability.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- Significant experience in network engineering, BGP routing, internet edge infrastructure, or enterprise network architecture.
- Strong understanding of BGP path selection, route attributes, eBGP, iBGP, route reflectors, communities, and routing policy design.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise routers and routing platforms from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Arista, or equivalent providers.
- Knowledge of IPv4, IPv6, subnetting, IP addressing, TCP/IP, and routing protocols such as OSPF and IS-IS.
- Experience with multi-homing, redundant internet connectivity, provider peering, and traffic engineering.
- Understanding of routing security, RPKI, prefix filtering, route leak prevention, and operational best practices.
- Familiarity with MPLS, EVPN, VXLAN, SD-WAN, cloud networking, and data center interconnection is an advantage.
- Experience with network monitoring, telemetry, packet analysis, and troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump.
- Proficiency in Python, Ansible, or similar tools for network automation and configuration management.
- Knowledge of network change control, incident management, disaster recovery, and service-level objectives.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to lead complex technical investigations and coordinate with geographically distributed teams.
- Relevant certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, JNCIE, or equivalent networking qualifications are advantageous.
- Routing Availability: Maintain reliable BGP connectivity across critical network paths.
- Convergence Performance: Meet defined route convergence and failover recovery targets.
- Incident Reduction: Reduce recurring routing failures, route flapping, and configuration-related incidents.
- Routing Security: Maintain compliance with approved filtering, peer validation, and routing security policies.
- Change Success Rate: Complete routing changes with minimal disruption and successful validation.
- Traffic Optimization: Improve routing efficiency and utilization of available network paths.
- Automation Coverage: Increase automated configuration validation and operational task execution.
- Documentation Accuracy: Maintain complete and current routing policies, network diagrams, and operational procedures.
- Competitive compensation based on qualifications and relevant experience.
- Fully remote work-from-home arrangements.
- Opportunities to work on complex enterprise routing, internet connectivity, and large-scale network infrastructure.
- Professional development in routing architecture, network security, automation, and cloud connectivity.
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV highlighting their experience in BGP engineering, routing policy design, traffic engineering, network resilience, and troubleshooting.
Please include examples of complex routing incidents resolved, network architecture improvements delivered, and automation initiatives that strengthened network reliability.
