We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator to join our Scientific Modeling, Application, Visualization, Computational Science, Software, and Statistical Support (SMAVCS4) team to support the Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), a scientific organization working to support Agency decisions by providing solutions-driven research to rapidly evaluate the potential human health and environmental risks due to exposures to environmental chemicals and ensure the integrity of the freshwater environment and its capacity to support human well-being.
The selected candidate will interface with the EPA Product Team and developers and will be responsible for but not limited to installation, capacity planning, configuration, database design, migration, performance monitoring, security, administration & management of user accounts, troubleshooting, disaster recovery as well as backup and data recovery to ensure the availability and consistent performance of OCSPP’s software and applications.
The selected candidate for this role must have a high degree of attention to detail as well as a collaborative and solution-oriented working style.
Description of Function:
- Install, configure, administer, manage, and document MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL (MongoDB) in a Cluster/Master with Replicas configuration across several nodes using HAProxy for load balancing, failover, and high availability across environments already procured by CCTE
- Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time—including troubleshooting PL/SQL, stored procedures, and Oracle database packages—providing end-to-end problem resolution
- Advise Division management officials regarding integration of IT programs with other programs of equivalent scope and complexity. Lead engineering and architecture activities related to database performance monitoring and system health
- Evaluate and establish database architecture standards, high availability, disaster recovery strategies, and work methods to continuously optimize both relational and non-relational data stores and clusters. Manage database assets including maintenance of inventory and related documentation
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Provide expert level DBA services for production, stage, and development databases across all platforms. Work with senior developers and data modelers to perform physical database design for critical business applications/databases with the largest numbers of interfaces and users
- Support both automated and ad-hoc report generation as well as existing ETL processes and data pipelines across enterprise platforms
- Use expert communication and collaboration skills to provide domain and technical expertise, and offer technical mentorship and cross-training to peers and team members
- Work involves analyzing the user experience of a variety of Agency IT programs and recommending design changes that can enhance the user experience and query performance.
- Maintain advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
Required Technical Qualifications:
- Technical Training, Certification(s) or Degree
- 3+ years of related experience
- Experience working in Linux environments
- Strong command-line experience including Unix shell scripting, PowerShell, and AWS CLI for cloud storage management
- Experience with Administering SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc.) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) technologies
- Experience configuring and managing HAProxy/Keepalived for database load balancing, connection pooling, and automated failover routing
- Experience managing automated database backups, repositories (e.g., pgBackRest), and backup retention strategies utilizing AWS S3 object storage
- Ability to perform complex command-line scripts and SQL queries
- Ability to thrive in an environment without a managed database service
- Advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards

- Ability to prioritize and complete a wide variety of tasking workloads with critical deadlines
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Superior communications skills, and a demonstrated ability to maintain a patient and professional demeanor, with a can-do attitude
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and professionally to both technical and non-technical parties (who may be key stakeholders)
- Ability to manage equipment and services in remote locations
- Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment
- Workability to perform well under pressure
- Strong customer service orientation
- Ability to maintain an organized workflow, with a high degree of attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with MongoDB OpsManager is highly preferred
- Familiarity with Oracle Database Appliances (ODA) is a plus
- Familiarity or experience with Documentum or enterprise content management database backends is a plus
Beneficial:

Clearance Requirements:
- Security Clearance Level: must be able to obtain EPA Public Trust Level 4

Salary Information
The likely salary range for this position is $97,968 - $129,950. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
