Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, Ads & AI

The opportunity

Unity is shipping AI products into the hands of millions of creators, and the data infrastructure behind Unity’s Grow business is being rebuilt at the same time. This role is the lawyer at the center of both. You will be the legal owner for Unity’s AI product portfolio — in-editor and desktop AI agents, generative tooling, our agent plugin ecosystem, and the ML systems powering ad monetization — and for the identity and data-rights frameworks those products depend on. The questions are genuinely unsettled. Who owns the output of a generative tool a developer directs? What can a platform train on when 90% of games embed third-party marketplace assets? When does a telemetry default cross from convenience into a consent problem? You will not be applying a playbook. You will be writing it, and your written positions will govern how products get built. Short-term success (first two quarters): the uncovered matters have a clear owner and a documented position; product teams route AI and data questions to you by default rather than escalating; the highest-risk open items have decisions attached to them. Longer-term success: Unity’s AI and data-use positions are coherent across the portfolio rather than negotiated product by product; the frameworks scale without you personally reviewing every request; you are a trusted voice with product and engineering leadership on what Unity should and should not do. Impact. This is a small legal team where each lawyer owns their swimlanes outright. There is no layer between you and the product decisions. What you write becomes the company’s position.

What you'll be doing

• Serve as primary legal counsel for Unity’s AI product portfolio — desktop and in-editor AI agents, generative tooling, the agent plugin ecosystem, and AI-driven marketing and monetization products — from concept through launch and iteration.

• Own the data-rights and identity frameworks underpinning Unity’s Grow business, including developer data-use architecture, training-data eligibility, device identifiers and cross-product data flows.

• Counsel product, engineering and data-science teams in the room where features are designed, converting privacy, IP and regulatory constraints into requirements engineers can build to.

• Draft and negotiate the agreements that make the roadmap possible — model and technology provider licenses, partnership and referral agreements, research collaborations and data-sharing arrangements.

• Set and defend Unity’s positions on emerging AI and data questions in writing, and build the templates, playbooks and guidance that let those positions scale across teams

What we're looking for

• Licensed to practice law, with in-house or law-firm experience counseling technology product teams directly.

• Demonstrated ownership of legal counseling for AI or machine-learning products, covering training-data rights, model licensing, output ownership and user-facing disclosures.

• Working command of global privacy law — GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, COPPA — applied to SDKs, telemetry and advertising data flows, not just policy documentation.

• Ability to draft and negotiate commercial technology agreements independently, from first redline to signature.

• A track record of issuing clear written legal positions on unprecedented questions and defending them with senior stakeholders.

You might also have (optional)

• Experience in games, interactive entertainment, or a developer-platform business.

• Mobile advertising or ad tech background — mediation, attribution, programmatic, or measurement.

• Hands-on EU AI Act or comparable emerging-AI-regulation assessment work.

• Open-source licensing depth, especially license compatibility for datasets and embedded assets.

• Experience building legal self-service infrastructure for fast-moving product organizations.

• Comfort using AI tools in your own practice.

Base Salary Range: We determine the base salary range for this role based on your primary work location:

Zone A: $233,600 - $350,400 USD gross
Zone B: $264,000 - $396,000 USD gross
Zone C: $311,400 - $467,200 USD gross

This range reflects the anticipated base salary for this position. Beyond base salary, this role may be eligible for equity awards and participation in our company incentive plans (such as annual discretionary bonuses or sales commissions). The final offer amount will depend on several factors, including geographic location and the candidate’s relevant experience, professional background, and skill set.
