Role Overview

SugarAI ships AI-powered selling and sales intelligence products in a market that moves faster every day. As a Senior Software Engineer, you are the technical execution lead for your team's most complex features — the person who defines the spec and implementation standards the area works from, mentors the engineers around you, and is trusted to own full feature areas from specification through production without day-to-day oversight. Senior engineers here don't just use AI-first development practices; they set the standard for how those practices work within their team.

This is not a role for someone who is still developing their point of view on agentic development, or who leads through output alone. It's a role for someone who has built and shipped complex software using agentic workflows with genuine rigor — who knows what good attestation looks like, can identify where AI-generated code fails silently, and has a track record of raising the technical bar for the people around them. You'll own systems that affect real customer outcomes at scale, and you'll be the voice your teammates turn to when implementation gets hard.

If you're energized by technical leadership that makes other engineers better — and by building software at the frontier of how AI-first teams actually work — this role is for you.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership & Standards

  • Define the spec and implementation standards your feature area or team works from; ensure agentic development practices are rigorous, consistent, and improving over time

  • Drive adoption of AI-first development practices within your team — not by evangelizing, but by modeling excellent agentic workflows and raising the bar on attestation quality

  • Identify systemic complexity and surface architectural risks early, before they become incidents or accumulate as technical debt

  • Lead technical design discussions and represent engineering perspectives in cross-functional planning

Agentic Development Systems

  • Work from executable specifications — write clear SDD/BDD specs and acceptance criteria as the primary input for AI-assisted code generation, and set the standard for spec quality your team learns from

  • Use agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalents) as standard equipment across the full SDLC, and contribute actively to how the team's agentic development workflow evolves

  • Apply authoritative judgment to AI-generated code and agentic attestations — your review catches edge cases, security implications, and subtle correctness issues that junior reviewers miss

  • Own the team's attestation quality standards; ensure every engineer understands what a meaningful review looks like versus a rubber stamp

Feature Delivery

  • Lead the design and delivery of complex features and cross-team components that are reliable, maintainable, and built to perform in high-volume, high-availability SaaS environments

  • Own feature areas end-to-end with high autonomy — from requirement through production — including identifying and resolving defects before they reach customers

  • Make sound architectural decisions within your area; recognize when decisions have cross-team implications and escalate proactively

Mentorship & Team Quality

  • Mentor L1 and L2 engineers actively — through spec reviews, code reviews, pair work, and direct feedback — and invest in their growth as a deliberate part of your role

  • Contribute to hiring by participating in technical interviews and articulating the team's engineering bar clearly

  • Raise the quality bar through review, not just through your own output; your feedback is specific, actionable, and makes PRs better before they merge

Collaboration & Systems Thinking

  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and QA engineers to understand requirements and shape the right solution, not just the specified one

  • Think across system boundaries: understand the downstream effects of your design decisions on adjacent services, data pipelines, and customer experience

  • Communicate clearly in writing — in specs, in code reviews, in async updates and technical presentations — to keep cross-functional and globally distributed teams aligned

What Success Looks Like

  • You can point to complex features you led from spec through production using agentic workflows, and speak to how you raised the delivery quality and speed of the engineers working alongside you

  • The standards your team works from — in specs, in attestation, in code review — are materially better because you've shaped them; teammates can articulate why

  • AI-generated code you've attested has a clean track record: no silent failures, no regressions that slipped past your review; your attestation carries weight

  • L1 and L2 engineers you've mentored are shipping better specs, catching more in review, and building judgment faster than they would have without your investment

  • When complexity is compounding — in a system, in a codebase, in a release — you identified it early and surfaced it in a way that gave the team time to act

Required Qualifications

  • Personal fluency with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalents) — you have a track record of using these in real delivery scenarios, not as an experiment, and a developed point of view on how they change software quality and speed

  • Proven hands-on experience with BDD/SDD frameworks and working from executable specifications as the primary input to development; you have a point of view on what makes a good spec and have set standards others have learned from

  • 5+ years of experience developing enterprise or SaaS software in production environments, including ownership of complex features from design through delivery

  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented or modern SaaS language; demonstrated ability to pick up new languages and frameworks quickly as the work demands

  • Experience with RESTful API design and consumption, including designing for reliability and evolvability

  • Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL data stores

  • Experience producing and maintaining automated test suites (unit, integration, and end-to-end); ability to evaluate test quality, not just coverage

  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments with CI/CD pipelines, and familiarity with observability and release practices

  • Strong written communication skills; able to write clear specs that serve as authoritative inputs to agentic generation, deliver high-signal code review feedback, and communicate technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or equivalent) and microservices architectures, including operational considerations (scaling, reliability, cost)

  • Familiarity with containerization, infrastructure-as-code, or observability tooling in a production SaaS context

  • Experience developing or integrating with AI/ML features in a production SaaS product

  • Background in B2B SaaS, CRM, or revenue technology; understanding of how enterprise software is bought and used.

We understand that no candidate is perfectly qualified for any job. Experience comes in different forms; many skills are transferable; and passion goes a long way. Even more important than your resume is a clear demonstration of dedication, impact, and the ability to thrive in a fluid and collaborative environment. We want you to learn new things in this role, and we encourage you to apply if your experience is close to what we’re looking for. We also know that diversity of background and thought makes for better problem solving and more creative thinking, which is why we're dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team.

We use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support our recruiting process, including scheduling, candidate search, prioritization. AI does not make hiring decisions or automatically reject candidates; those decisions are made by people at SugarAI.
