Overview
At Lupa, we're hiring a Senior Engineering Manager, Quality Engineering & Enablement to build and lead a brand-new team of Quality Engineers based in Mexico. This is a rare opportunity to establish a Quality Engineering function from the ground up inside a profitable, fast-growing technology organization — one that pairs the stability of an established, acquisitive company with the energy and autonomy of a startup.
This is a people leadership role with a strong technical foundation. You'll shape hiring strategy, set technical direction, drive delivery, and champion modern, automation-first quality practices across a growing engineering organization. If you're passionate about automation, developer enablement, AI-assisted testing, and shift-left quality — and you love building teams and culture from scratch — this role was made for you.
You'll work at the intersection of engineering leadership, automation, AI, and developer enablement, partnering directly with development teams to make quality a shared responsibility rather than a final checkpoint.
What You'll Do
People Leadership & Team Building
Hire, onboard, coach, and develop a team of approximately 6–8 Quality Engineers based in Mexico.
Run regular 1:1s, provide feedback, and support both technical and leadership growth across the team.
Set clear expectations, manage performance, and cultivate a high-ownership, collaborative team culture.
Delivery & Execution
Own sprint planning, prioritization, and delivery commitments for the Quality Engineering roadmap.
Balance technical improvements, automation coverage, quality risks, and business priorities.
Identify blockers and dependencies, make thoughtful tradeoffs, and ensure consistent, meaningful delivery.
Use delivery and quality metrics to continuously improve team effectiveness.
Technical Leadership
Partner with senior QEs to guide automation framework architecture, tooling, and quality practices.
Stay close enough to the technology to review designs, challenge technical decisions, and unblock complex problems.
Establish scalable approaches to automated testing across API, integration, and end-to-end workflows.
Champion AI-assisted development and testing practices, including AI-driven test automation where appropriate.
Help the team build reusable frameworks, tooling, and patterns rather than one-off test cases.
Developer Enablement & Shift-Left Quality
Work closely with engineering teams to make quality a shared responsibility across the development lifecycle.
Help teams identify and address quality risks earlier, and encourage developers to own automated coverage.
Drive adoption of meaningful quality signals such as production smoke tests, contract testing, API testing, and end-to-end coverage.
Process, Standards & Stakeholder Partnership
Evolve Quality Engineering processes as the organization grows.
Establish effective approaches to test management, CI/CD integration, quality gates, and reporting.
Partner with engineering managers, product leaders, and technical stakeholders to align quality initiatives with broader goals.
Communicate team health, delivery progress, technical risks, and quality trends to senior leadership.
Who You Are
Must-Haves
8+ years of engineering management experience leading software engineering, Quality Engineering, or closely related technical teams.
A strong hands-on software engineering background before moving into management — enough depth to engage meaningfully with engineers and technical decisions.
Demonstrated experience championing automation, testing strategy, developer enablement, or quality engineering practices.
Proven experience hiring, onboarding, developing, and scaling engineering teams.
Comfort discussing modern automation technologies (e.g., Playwright or similar), CI/CD, API testing, and integration testing.
Fluency with modern AI-assisted development and testing workflows.
Experience with Agile delivery, sprint planning, backlog management, prioritization, and technical tradeoffs.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills across engineers, managers, product stakeholders, and senior leadership.
A high-agency, ownership-driven mindset — someone who takes a problem, builds the solution end to end, and can point to the results.
Nice-to-Haves
Experience in healthcare, insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries.
Experience with enterprise integrations or complex distributed systems.
Experience building or scaling a Quality Engineering function from an early stage.
Experience leading distributed or geographically diverse teams.
Experience introducing AI-assisted engineering or testing practices into an organization.
What's In It For You
Full-time employment through a local Mexican entity, with the associated statutory benefits Mexico is known for.
Work setup: Mexico, remote
Schedule & timezone: Standard full-time schedule in Mexico
Growth & impact: Build a team from the ground up and shape its culture, hiring strategy, and technical direction, with meaningful influence over how Quality Engineering evolves across a growing tech organization.
The best of both worlds: The stability of a profitable, expanding company combined with the autonomy and creativity of a startup environment — you get to build and ship without worrying about runway.
