Senior IT Security Engineer - [Portugal / Spain / Poland - Remote]
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Join a challenging enterprise technology environment where cybersecurity, resilience and risk management are central to business operations. As a Senior IT Security Engineer, you will help shape security capabilities, strengthen protection across complex IT environments and improve how security threats are detected, investigated and resolved.
This role combines hands-on technical expertise with specialist leadership. You will influence security strategy, advise stakeholders on risk-based decisions, mentor engineers and drive continuous improvement through automation, secure architecture and effective operational processes.
PROJECT & CONTEXT
You will take a leading role across security monitoring, detection engineering, incident response and security systems engineering. Working with multiple telemetry sources and security technologies, you will investigate complex alerts, lead high-impact incidents and develop detection capabilities that improve threat coverage while maintaining high alert quality.
You will also architect, implement and support security controls, identify vulnerabilities and drive practical remediation across enterprise technology environments. A key part of the position involves designing maintainable automation and system integrations that reduce repetitive work and deliver reliable security outcomes at scale.
Beyond technical delivery, you will advise on architecture, access management and security exceptions, helping stakeholders make informed risk decisions. You will contribute to security policies and guidance, strengthen security awareness through measurable insights, manage vendor relationships and support the development of other engineers through mentoring and knowledge sharing.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)
- Substantial hands-on experience in IT security engineering or security operations, including leadership of complex investigations and high-impact incident response.
- Strong detection engineering experience across SIEM, IDS and multiple security telemetry sources.
- Experience developing, improving and tuning security detections to increase coverage and minimise false positives.
- Practical experience architecting, implementing and supporting security controls in complex IT environments.
- Experience with vulnerability management, security assessment and the remediation of technical vulnerabilities.
- Ability to develop maintainable scripts, automation workflows and system integrations that improve security operations at scale.
- Sound technical judgement when assessing security risks involving access management, exceptions, architecture and technology choices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce security policies, technical guidance and clear communications for senior stakeholders.
- Proven experience mentoring engineers, providing specialist security consultancy and developing technical documentation or knowledge-sharing resources.
- Experience improving security awareness using metrics, data and stakeholder feedback.
- Experience managing security vendors, including product evaluation, due diligence, account management and renewals.
- Ability to rapidly develop expertise in unfamiliar technologies, understand emerging vulnerabilities and attack techniques, and translate that knowledge into practical security improvements.
- A proactive, analytical and collaborative approach to security engineering and continuous improvement.
- Professional working proficiency in English.
NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)
- Hands-on experience with Splunk or comparable SIEM, security monitoring and detection platforms.
- Broader security experience across endpoint, network, identity, web security, data protection and vulnerability management.
- Experience designing security integrations and automation across multiple platforms and data sources.
- Relevant cybersecurity certifications or equivalent demonstrable technical expertise.
- Experience establishing detection and response metrics, improving incident management processes and developing evidence-based security awareness initiatives.
- Experience influencing security architecture and technical direction in complex enterprise environments.
Compensation: €2,300 – €3,300/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
