Ardurra has an excellent opportunity for a full-time Senior ITS Engineer – Intelligent Transportation Systems to join our Transportation Team in Orlando, Tampa, or Miami, Florida!
Ardurra is a multidisciplinary civil engineering services firm which provides broad-based solutions tailored to the specific needs of the public and private sector. We leverage the depth of our professional and technical expertise, as well as our integrated structure, to deliver practical, innovative solutions for our clients.
We have been creating opportunities for our employees to develop both personally and professionally. As a result, our team has contributed to some of the nation’s most important infrastructure projects. These are projects that can positively impact people’s lives.
Primary Function:
The Senior ITS Engineer will serve as a senior technical specialist responsible for the design, analysis, and development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for transportation infrastructure projects throughout Florida. This position will focus on advanced ITS engineering, including traffic management systems, communications infrastructure, traffic monitoring technologies, and other systems that improve transportation safety, mobility, and operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive technical expertise in ITS design, a strong understanding of FDOT standards, and the ability to independently develop engineering solutions for complex transportation projects. This position emphasizes hands-on technical engineering, design leadership, and mentorship rather than traditional project management responsibilities. The position may be based in Orlando, Tampa, or Miami, with a hybrid work schedule available as approved by the supervisor.
Primary Duties:
- Lead and perform technical design of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for FDOT, municipal, and other transportation agency projects.
- Develop engineering plans, specifications, calculations, quantities, and construction cost estimates for ITS infrastructure.
- Design ITS components, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, dynamic message signs (DMS), vehicle detection systems, traffic monitoring equipment, and associated field devices.
- Develop fiber-optic communications networks, telecommunications infrastructure, equipment cabinets, and related ITS connectivity solutions.
- Support the design and integration of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Traffic Management Centers (TMC), and other transportation technology applications.
- Develop and review ITS system layouts, communications diagrams, network architecture, device specifications, and equipment configurations.
- Coordinate ITS design requirements with traffic signalization, roadway, electrical, and other transportation engineering disciplines.
- Perform technical evaluations of ITS equipment, communications technologies, and system integration requirements.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including reviewing submittals, responding to technical questions, and assisting with testing and system acceptance.
- Perform technical reviews and QA/QC of ITS design plans and engineering deliverables.
- Ensure designs comply with FDOT standards, applicable technical specifications, and industry requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex engineering challenges and support successful project delivery.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- 7–10+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience, with substantial emphasis on Intelligent Transportation Systems design.
- Demonstrated technical experience designing ITS infrastructure for transportation or public agency projects.
- Experience with ITS field devices, communications systems, traffic monitoring technologies, and associated infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of FDOT design standards, specifications, and ITS engineering requirements.
- Experience developing detailed engineering plans, specifications, calculations, and construction cost estimates.
- Proficiency with MicroStation and applicable engineering design software.
- Ability to independently evaluate complex engineering problems and develop practical technical solutions.
- Strong technical communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and provide technical guidance to engineering staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing ITS infrastructure for FDOT Districts 4, 5, 6, or 7, or Florida's Turnpike Enterprise.
- Experience with fiber-optic communications, network architecture, wireless communications, and ITS system integration.
- Experience with Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Traffic Management Centers (TMC), and connected transportation technologies.
- Experience with Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) projects.
- Experience with traffic signal systems, adaptive signal control, and related transportation technologies.
- Experience providing technical oversight and QA/QC for complex ITS design projects.
- PTOE or other relevant ITS/transportation technology certifications are a plus!
