Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.

The Senior Lead Accountant is a senior-level accounting professional responsible for leading complex accounting matters, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, audit support, and internal control activities for assigned entities, functions, or business units. The role operates with a high degree of independence and is accountable for the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and supportability of significant accounting and reporting deliverables. The Senior Lead Accountant is the technical-track equivalent of a Manager of Accounting and leads through expertise, review authority, project leadership, mentoring, collaboration, and influence rather than direct people management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead close management and accounting oversight for assigned entities, functions, or business units, including unique or judgmental matters, stakeholder engagement, issue resolution, and timely risk escalation.
  • Prepare and review complex or high-risk journal entries, reconciliations, trial-balance analyses, reporting schedules, and accounting conclusions.
  • Coordinate and oversee assigned financial statement, footnote, statutory, annual statement, regulatory, and other reporting deliverables.
  • Independently research and resolve complex or ambiguous accounting and reporting matters, balancing technical accuracy, controls, and business implications.
  • Lead assigned audit workstreams, coordinate PBC deliverables, resolve auditor questions, and ensure workpaper quality, completeness, evidence retention, and timely follow-up.
  • Serve as an ICFR and control-environment subject matter expert for assigned areas; identify gaps and lead improvements to controls, narratives, walkthroughs, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead significant cross-functional workflow, system, reporting, and control improvement initiatives.
  • Provide trusted technical guidance to Accounting leadership, team members, business partners, auditors, regulators, and third-party service providers.
  • Promote consistent standards for accuracy, review rigor, documentation, accountability, communication, and collaboration within assigned workstreams.
  • Mentor Accountants, Senior Accountants, and Lead Accountants; provide technical training and support development of future accounting leaders.
  • Prepare and present analyses and recommendations to senior management, auditors, and regulators with minimal oversight.
  • Foster relationship building and meaningful collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization through proactive on-site interaction.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP and strong command of complex accounting, financial reporting, audit, and internal control concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex, judgmental, or ambiguous matters and anticipate downstream and cross-functional impacts.
  • Ability to review the highest-risk work, challenge assumptions, document conclusions, and provide clear technical direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex matters to senior stakeholders and non-accounting audiences.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional leadership, relationship management, conflict resolution, analytical, organizational, and project leadership skills.
  • Experience leading process, system, reporting, or control improvements and mentoring accounting professionals.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with SQL, multidimensional data warehouses, or business intelligence tools is a plus.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including significant responsibility for complex close, reporting, audit support, and internal controls.
  • Experience in financial services, insurance, investment management, pension funds, public accounting, or another regulated environment is preferred.
