EDF Forests Overview

EDF’s Forests Focus Area is one of EDF’s 8 global impact areas, whose goals rise to the level of the enormity of the climate and nature crisis. Through demonstrating proof of concept for large-scale forest conservation, engaging key Indigenous peoples and local communities forest policies and programs, and scaling access to finance for these solutions, EDF seeks to contribute global-scale contributions in support of meeting global targets to halt and reverse global forest loss by 2030 while boosting local livelihoods and forest restoration.

Protecting forests that regulate climate, preserve biodiversity, and support the livelihoods and climate adaptation of millions of people is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Recognizing the urgency, and in anticipation of a grant award with the World Bank, EDF and key partners will support jurisdictional REDD+ programming and transaction advisory, deploying a transaction-focused delivery model, grounded in direct advisory support to governments and designed to move jurisdictions from readiness to executed carbon market transactions.

Overall Function

Environmental Defense Fund, Inc. ("EDF") seeks to engage a Senior Manager to serve on a two [2] year, renewable, fixed-term contract. This individual will serve as the analytical and execution backbone of EDF's transaction advisory engagement across four LAC countries under the World Bank program to mobilize 8 and 9 figure carbon transactions to support ongoing jurisdictional scale forest protection program. Working as a team with the Senior Director, Latin America Carbon Transaction Advisory, Senior Director of Sustainable Finance, and Program Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Latin America Carbon Advisory in managing senior government relationships across participating countries, helping translate government priorities into clear workplans, decision points, and transaction pathways.
  • Develop country commercialization strategies, including market pathways, pricing recommendations, transaction structures, buyer engagement plans, and implementation roadmaps aligned with government priorities.
  • Lead transaction analytical support, including buyer engagement, proposal evaluation, due diligence processes, negotiation preparation, term sheet development, and transaction structuring.
  • Coordinate delivery across workstreams, ensuring alignment among government stakeholders, implementing agencies, legal counsel, technical experts, and external advisors to maintain momentum toward transaction milestones.
  • Develop decision-support materials and financial analyses, including pricing models, revenue projections, benefit-sharing analyses, ministerial briefings, negotiation memoranda, and other materials required for government decision-making.
  • Provide ongoing market intelligence and strategic advice, tracking policy developments across voluntary and compliance carbon markets and translating market trends into actionable recommendations for participating governments.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Native or fully bilingual Spanish speaker with excellent written and verbal communication skills. English fluency required.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience in sustainable finance, management consulting, investment banking, or carbon markets — ideally with direct experience supporting deal execution or financial structuring plus Bachelor's or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Passionate about conservation, and a strong belief in market-based approaches to provide more equitable financing for forest landscapes
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills, including experience building pricing models, scenario analyses, DCF models, or benefit-sharing/revenue flow models.
  • Demonstrated ability to support complex, multi-stakeholder engagements, including experience preparing materials for and participating in senior-level meetings.
  • Experience synthesizing complex technical, financial, and market data into clear, decision-ready outputs (memos, slide decks, briefings) for senior audiences.
  • Strong project management and coordination skills — ability to keep multiple workstreams moving across countries, partners, and timelines simultaneously.
  • Experience in emerging markets or Latin America is a strong plus.
  • Experience in carbon markets, climate finance, or sustainability is a strong plus — but we will prioritize candidates with exceptional analytical, deal-support, and execution capabilities over deep carbon technical knowledge.
  • Experience working with or presenting to government officials, multilateral institutions, or C-suite executives.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 30% of the time across Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala and to the EDF's New York office.

We offer a strong total rewards package encompassing competitive salary, robust benefits, and professional development opportunities consistent with a modern global organization. We take into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
