About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Senior Metabolomics Assay Specialist to provide technical leadership in the development, optimization, validation, and analytical interpretation of metabolomics assays. The role focuses on designing robust analytical workflows for the detection, identification, and quantification of metabolites in biological, pharmaceutical, and research samples. The successful candidate will provide remote technical oversight, review analytical performance, assess complex datasets, and collaborate with laboratory scientists, bioinformaticians, research teams, and quality professionals to support reliable and reproducible metabolomics results.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the development and optimization of targeted and untargeted metabolomics assay strategies.
- Design analytical workflows for metabolite extraction, sample preparation, separation, detection, and quantification.
- Provide technical guidance on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and related analytical platforms.
- Evaluate assay suitability for different sample matrices, including plasma, serum, urine, tissue, cell extracts, and other biological materials.
- Review analytical methods for metabolite coverage, sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and quantitative performance.
- Oversee the technical assessment of sample preparation procedures, extraction efficiency, derivatization, and metabolite stability.
- Evaluate internal standards, calibration strategies, quality control samples, and analytical reference materials.
- Review method validation and verification activities, including accuracy, precision, linearity, recovery, matrix effects, and limits of detection and quantification.
- Assess analytical batch performance, system suitability, retention time consistency, signal quality, and instrument drift.
- Review metabolite identification, annotation, and quantification workflows.
- Provide guidance on data normalization, missing-value assessment, batch correction, and quality control procedures.
- Interpret complex metabolomics datasets and identify meaningful metabolic patterns and analytical trends.
- Collaborate with bioinformatics and data science teams on statistical analysis, pathway enrichment, and metabolite profiling.
- Investigate analytical discrepancies, unexpected results, contamination signals, and potential sources of measurement bias.
- Review analytical protocols, SOPs, validation reports, technical summaries, and controlled laboratory documentation.
- Support the development of metabolomics assay transfer and lifecycle management strategies.
- Assess the impact of changes in sample handling, storage conditions, analytical platforms, and laboratory procedures on assay performance.
- Contribute to research projects involving metabolic biomarkers, disease-associated metabolic changes, pharmaceutical development, and biochemical pathways.
- Monitor advances in metabolomics technologies, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, and relevant scientific standards.
- Recommend improvements to analytical workflows, data integrity controls, reproducibility, and reporting practices.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Metabolomics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline.
- A doctoral degree or equivalent research experience is advantageous for advanced research-focused responsibilities.
- Significant experience in metabolomics assay development, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, or biochemical analysis.
- Strong practical knowledge of LC-MS and/or GC-MS analytical workflows.
- Experience with targeted and untargeted metabolomics methodologies.
- Understanding of metabolite extraction, sample preparation, derivatization, and analytical separation techniques.
- Knowledge of biological sample matrices and factors affecting metabolite stability and measurement.
- Experience evaluating assay performance, including precision, accuracy, recovery, linearity, sensitivity, and matrix effects.
- Familiarity with internal standards, calibration curves, pooled quality control samples, and reference materials.
- Understanding of metabolite identification, annotation, quantification, and pathway analysis.
- Experience reviewing complex analytical datasets and identifying sources of technical variability.
- Familiarity with metabolomics data processing software and bioinformatics tools.
- Knowledge of statistical methods, data normalization, batch correction, and quality control assessment.
