Senior Research Engineer - Floorplan Optimization
laioutlaiout is a fully automated architectural design tool for floor planning, generating custom layouts in seconds instead of weeks, while delivering data on costs, carbon emissions, and efficiency. Clients already generate over 5 million m² of layouts every month, and growth is accelerating.
We're now looking for a Senior Research Engineer to own the optimization algorithms at the heart of our floorplan generator.
We're a team with diverse backgrounds rethinking how offices are designed. Backed by venture capital investors and global clients, we combine architectural insights with automation.
You'll work with a small, technically deep team - strong backgrounds in physics and scientific programming - on problems where the quality of the maths is the quality of the product. Small team, deep problems, short path from idea to production.
You'll own the algorithms that partition floorplans into zones and sectors optimally. This is a mature problem in our system: the work is iterative improvement on a solid base, and laying the groundwork for v2.0 of our floorplan generator.
You will participate in laying the architectural groundwork for v2.0 of our floorplan generator by
- Taking responsibility for improving and extending the partitioning algorithms that lie at the heart of floorplan generation.
- Measuring what "good" means by extending upon and refining our benchmarks that help us evaluate changes to the algorithms.
- Prototyping fast in TypeScript and/or Python, then align with developers, or on your own harden what works into production code.
- Working directly with our CTO, and our senior backend developers in order to take ideas from the whiteboard to realizations within our core floorplan generator.
You're a researcher at heart, but find yourself leaning into engineering as well. You enjoy seeing theoretical and academic work actually getting put into practice to solve a real life problem saving users up to 90% of their time. You're comfortable with problems that are about balancing optimality with feasibility within time constraints, that is, you take pleasure in finding good compromises between perfection and what is possible realistically with the resources at hand. You are happy to own your area and domain of expertise, being proactive rather than waiting for someone else to tell you what to do.
Requirements:
- MSc or higher in mathematics, physics, or computer science
- Hands-on experience solving optimization problems
- Strong TypeScript and/or Python for scripting and prototyping purposes.
- Genuine interest in mathematical optimization
- Interest in AI
- Interest in architecture and the built environment
- Comfortable with vague guidelines and high autonomy
- Great communication and collaboration skills with a solution oriented mindset.
- ±3 hours of CEST time zone
Nice to have (perk):
- Rust, for the parts that need to be fast
- Enjoy going deep on one hard problem rather than broad and shallow.
- Are motivated by measurable improvement - better layouts, faster runtimes, cleaner abstractions.
- Like working in small, high-pace and high-ownership teams.
- Value open communication and constant iteration.
- Are motivated by autonomy, trust, and long-term product impact.
We're a remote team. We value autonomy and proactivity - you set your own direction day to day. Regular but flexible online meetings, with Slack holding it together.
- Fully remote role (±3h Oslo) with flexible hours.
- Equity in a fast-growing global SaaS company.
- Full ownership of a core part of the product, with a short path from idea to production.
- Collaborative and technically sharp teammates.
- Annual European off-sites.
Here’s what you can expect if you get called in for an interview.
- Intro Call (30 min)
- 1st Technical Deep Dive
- 2nd Technical Deep Dive
- Final Decision: We get back to you with feedback and a decision.

In the cover letter, make sure to say a few things about yourself and your background as well as what excites you about laiout, and why you think you would be a great fit for this role. Oh and it goes without saying, resist the temptation to use AI for this ;)
Should you have any questions then please don’t hesitate to send them to hiring@laiout.co.
