Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Resource and Innovation Manager. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.

The Objective: The Senior Resource and Innovation Manager serves as the strategic coordinator for the firm's global Research & Information vendor portfolio. This role is responsible for maximizing the value, effectiveness, and return on investment of the firm’s information resources through strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, vendor governance, stakeholder engagement, and data-driven decision making. This role will serve as a trusted advisor to R&I, Innovation, and firm leadership, identifying opportunities to strengthen vendor partnerships, advance innovative solutions and ensure alignment with evolving attorney, client, and business needs.

What will I do? Working in close partnership with the Vendor Management Office, Finance, Technology, Information Security, and Practice Groups, and other key stakeholders, the Senior Resource and Innovation Manager aligns research resource investments with firm priorities and business objectives. The role requires a commercially minded professional who can lead high-value sourcing and renewal initiatives, manage a complex portfolio of legal and business vendors, and deliver data-informed recommendations that drive adoption and maximize return on the firm’s information resource investments.

Responsibilities

Strategic R&I Vendor Management

  • Develop and execute a global R&I vendor management strategy aligned with firm business objectives and practice group priorities.
  • Serve as primary commercial and technical contact for R&I vendors and technology partners.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with key global vendors to influence product roadmaps, ensure service delivery, and identify innovation/collaboration opportunities.
  • Continually work to identify opportunities for vendor consolidation, standardization, and enterprise licensing to maximize value and reduce management complexity.
  • Lead strategic sourcing and renewal initiatives across legal, business, and knowledge-management vendors.
  • Provide support and collaboration for cross-border colleagues for their jurisdictionally specific vendor contracts.

Finance and Operations

  • Responsible for daily management and oversight of global library budget including maintaining timely processing of renewals, regular reporting updates to leadership, and reforecasting processes, as necessary.
  • Collaborate on internal budget process with jurisdictional R&I leads, the R&I Senior Analyst and Director of R&I.
  • Continuously drive vendor tracking and documentation efficiencies, with a focus on transparency and consistency
  • Oversee R&I ad-hoc purchases, tracking, and budget allocations.
  • Oversee and advise on operational processes including management of Research Monitor, online catalog, and print collection.
  • Proactively deliver resource usage reporting and recommendations to the R&I management team, enabling data-informed collaborative outreach and training strategies that that drive adoption and maximize product-suite ROI.

Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead an operational support team including providing coaching, assessing, and maintaining workloads and identifying and providing opportunities for skills development.
  • Collaborate closely with R&I and Innovation senior leadership to ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of legal resource data feeds, including API’s and MCP’s, to advise on system requirements and contractual provisions, and proactively identify constraints affecting permitted dataset use cases.
  • Function as R&I liaison to Practice Group leadership teams providing regular resource updates on spend and usage data to ensure strategic alignment with attorney and client goals.
  • Function as trusted advisor to innovation and firm leadership on resource investment decisions, emerging market opportunities, and vendor strategy.
  • Proactively communicate resources changes, including technological enhancements and AI capabilities, to ensure ROI on resources.
  • Regularly partner with practice groups, innovation, legal research, business research, communications, marketing/BD, etc. to ensure resource investments meet business needs.
  • Create, track, and present clear business case recommendations on key investment decisions.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success leading high-value enterprise contract negotiations and procurement initiatives.
  • Proven experience managing complex vendor portfolios and strategic supplier relationships.
  • Strong understanding of procurement methodologies, sourcing strategies, financial analysis, and contract lifecycles management.
  • Experience identifying and delivering measurable cost savings, cost avoidance, and operational efficiencies.
  • Experience managing complex budgets and budget lifecycles.
  • Knowledge of legal technology, research platforms, AI-enabled information services, and evolving information marketplace trends including vendor knowledge for US, UK, Germany, and France.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to tailor communications to respective audiences and to interact with all levels of law firm personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong collaborator with proven record of working in matrixed environment.
  • People management experience preferred.
  • Strong project management skills; capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to drive high-quality project outcomes, think outside of the box and creatively solve old and new challenges leveraging AI technologies.
  • Previous experience as a legal researcher, with real world working knowledge of tools in contract portfolio, preferred.
  • Master’s degree in library/information science (from ALA accredited school) preferred.
  • Familiarity with MS Office and high level of comfort with legal library technology and information technology required.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is:

  • New York City, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco $147,000 - $190,000
  • Washington DC, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica, Sacramento, Boston, and Seattle $132,000 - $180,000
  • All Other US Locations $119,000 - $175,000

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick’s estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
