Our Science and Insights team is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist Soil and Landscapes to provide advanced scientific expertise that strengthens the understanding, management and sustainable use of NSW’s soils and landscapes.
In this role, you will lead and deliver complex soil and landscape science projects that inform evidence-based decision making across the Department. Working at the intersection of science, policy and environmental management, you will provide expert technical advice, undertake soil and landscape assessments and contribute to the development of innovative scientific solutions that support environmental outcomes for NSW. The role offers the opportunity to apply specialist knowledge across soil profile description and classification, geomorphology, landscape assessment, GIS and spatial technologies while delivering high-quality scientific outputs.
You will be part of a highly skilled and collaborative team that values scientific excellence, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Working closely with colleagues across DCCEEW, as well as universities, government agencies and research institutions, you will build strong professional networks, contribute to strategic soil and landscape knowledge priorities and help shape science programs that address current and emerging environmental challenges.
The role involves preparing technical reports, scientific papers, briefings and presentations, as well as supporting the successful delivery of projects through effective planning, stakeholder engagement and project management.
The role also involves occasional fieldwork, including work in remote areas.
About You
You are an experienced scientist with a strong background in soil and landscape science and a demonstrated track record of delivering rigorous scientific projects and assessments. Your expertise includes soil profile description and classification, geomorphology, landscape assessment and the application of GIS, spatial data and mapping tools. You are comfortable interpreting complex scientific information and translating it into practical advice, recommendations and products that support decision making across a diverse range of stakeholders. Relevant scientific qualifications and/or equivalent professional experience will support your success in this role.
You bring excellent communication, collaboration and analytical skills, enabling you to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and with external partners. You are adept at managing competing priorities, identifying practical solutions to complex problems, and delivering high-quality outcomes within agreed timeframes and budgets. A proactive and curious approach to learning, combined with strong project management capability and the ability to establish productive stakeholder relationships, will see you thrive in this role and contribute to the ongoing success of DCCEEW's science programs.

Science & Insights sits within the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), which works to protect the state’s environment and heritage while driving a sustainable future for NSW.
Working at the intersection of science, policy and delivery, Science & Insights collaborates across government, academia, industry and communities to identify priority issues and deliver practical, high-impact solutions.
