Senior Software Engineer | Full-time employment via We Are Kusudi

Kusudi is hiring for a UK health and care tech startup that is fixing one of the UK's most broken sectors: care.

WHAT THEY'RE BUILDING

They've built compliance and immigration technology that helps care providers hire both locally and internationally, while automating Home Office requirements, right-to-work checks and the paperwork that usually makes this take months. They're not a typical recruitment platform: they're building infrastructure for the whole sector, and they're now expanding into new parts of the market.

WHY IT MATTERS

Care is one of the UK's most understaffed sectors, and most of that strain comes from broken infrastructure, not broken intent. Every delay has a real person on the other end of it: a care worker whose visa is stuck, a provider one inspection away from losing their ability to operate, a resident who needs staff who aren't there because hiring took too long.

When you ship something here, you can trace it directly to someone's job, someone's care, someone's ability to stay in the country they've built a life in. That line of sight, from code to consequence, is rare.

THE ROLE

You'll own features end to end, from understanding the problem through to shipping the solution:

• Work directly with stakeholders to understand what needs building
• Start from a feature goal and own the implementation through to roll-out
• Make pragmatic scope calls when trading speed against completeness
• Ship features that directly affect users

You'll join a collaborative team of 7 engineers, under the leadership of their experienced CTO, with real problems to work on from week one.

WHAT YOU’LL BUILD

• Conversational AI that screens and supports care workers through finding a job, onboarding and their whole career
• Document intelligence: OCR, extraction and validation across onboarding and audits
• Integrations with the Home Office, the CQC and the other systems the sector runs on
• New product surfaces as the company expands into new markets
• Systems that hold up under real load as the company grows from seed to Series A and beyond

THE STACK

• Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, GraphQL
• Frontend: SolidJS, TypeScript
• Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform
• Tools: Cursor, Linear, Notion, GitHub
• TypeScript and Node.js are preferred but not essential: good engineering judgement and the ability to ship matter more than specific tech. ML/AI experience is a bonus.

YOU SHOULD APPLY IF YOU

• Have designed, built and shipped production systems yourself
• Have been through the startup-to-scale transition: managing technical debt and keeping systems reliable as they grow
• Enjoy talking to stakeholders and getting to the real problem
• Write code other people can understand and maintain
• Have worked remotely and communicate well async
• Are energised by early-stage environments where things are still being figured out

This is a senior role only.

THE PACKAGE

This is a permanent, full-time employment contract with We Are Kusudi, not a contractor role. You’ll work full-time as part of the client’s engineering team, remotely from Kenya.

THE PROCESS (about 5.5 hours of your time over 3–4 weeks)

3. Live system design session with their CTO and engineers (45 mins)
4. Take-home task (2 hours, 3 working days to submit)
5. Review of your take-home, a live code change and a design follow-up (70 mins)
6. Optional culture conversation (30 mins)
