Job Description

As a Senior Software Engineer — Customer Files Orchestration, you will design, build, operate, and scale the Customer Files Orchestration Service for CoCounsel Legal. You will help make customer documents available to CoCounsel Legal agents through end-to-end orchestration of file upload, storage, extraction, embedding, and indexing workflows.

You will work closely with engineering teams responsible for storage, extraction, indexing, connectors, and front-end experiences to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable distributed systems. You will own meaningful components of the service, from technical design and implementation through deployment, operational support, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

In this opportunity as a Senior Software Engineer — Customer Files Orchestration, you will:

  • Own End-to-End Service Delivery: Design, implement, test, deploy, scale, and operate components of the Customer Files Orchestration Service.
  • Design Distributed Systems: Translate ambiguous requirements into technical designs, document architectural decisions, and build services that manage durable state, asynchronous workflows, retries, partial failures, and long-running processing steps.
  • Build Queuing and Flow-Control Capabilities: Develop fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, circuit-breaking, dead-letter handling, crash recovery, and autoscaling mechanisms to support high-volume, multi-tenant workloads.
  • Ensure Correctness and Reliability at Scale: Define and implement appropriate consistency models, idempotent processing, delivery guarantees, state transitions, and recovery mechanisms across asynchronous service boundaries.
  • Develop and Maintain APIs: Create and evolve file and workspace APIs with versioned contracts, documented behavior, backward compatibility, and deliberate change management.
  • Operate Production Services: Participate in the primary on-call rotation, lead incident response activities, contribute to post-mortems, and implement long-term solutions to prevent recurring issues.
  • Improve Observability and Operational Efficiency: Build instrumentation, tracing, and monitoring that enable rapid investigation of file-processing workflows and service behavior. Automate recurring manual processes and document operational procedures.
  • Collaborate Across Engineering Teams: Partner with storage, extraction, indexing, connectors, and front-end teams to ensure reliable integration and delivery across the customer file-processing pipeline.
  • Provide Technical Leadership: Mentor engineers through code and design reviews, contribute to engineering standards, and communicate technical trade-offs clearly to product partners and engineering teams.
  • Support Architecture and DevOps Practices: Contribute to system design, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, testing, observability, and operational practices as part of an engineering team responsible for both development and production operation.

Required Qualifications

You're a fit for the role of Senior Software Engineer — Customer Files Orchestration if you have the following required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience building production software and owning significant components within customer-facing systems.
  • Extensive experience with Python and AWS in production environments.
  • Experience developing and debugging concurrent Python applications, including asyncio, event-loop behavior, background tasks, semaphores, worker pools, and throughput limitations.
  • Experience with Kubernetes in production environments, including event-driven autoscaling with KEDA, resource requests, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing or supporting large-scale orchestration services or data pipelines that process work across multiple stages and service boundaries.
  • Hands-on understanding of consistency models, including appropriate use cases for eventual consistency and strongly consistent reads.
  • Experience with delivery guarantees, including at-least-once processing, exactly-once considerations, and idempotent system design.
  • Practical experience with queues, fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, multi-tenant fairness, and noisy-neighbor isolation.
  • Experience designing APIs with versioned contracts, clear ownership, backward compatibility, and documented behavior.
  • Experience operating production services, participating in on-call rotations, responding to incidents, and implementing permanent corrective actions.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including testing, code review, observability, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to document technical designs, explain trade-offs, and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with document and document management systems, including extraction, OCR, format handling, large-file processing, and third-party document management system integrations.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures, Kafka, MSK, SQS, or similar streaming and managed queuing technologies.
  • Familiarity with durable workflow engines such as Temporal, AWS Step Functions, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting retrieval, embedding, or indexing pipelines for LLM or agentic applications.
  • Prior exposure to the legal industry.
  • Familiarity with Team Topologies concepts, including stream-aligned teams, platform teams, and team boundary design.
