- Staff discounts and dining vouchers to enjoy through EatClub
A Day-in-a-Life of our Senior Software Engineer, Loyalty
As our Senior Software Engineer, Loyalty, you build the systems that reward our customers for dining out and connect EatClub to the loyalty programs they already love. Loyalty at EatClub sits close to money: every point earned, reward redeemed and partner balance moved has to be tracked, reconciled and honoured correctly, so you bring ledger-grade rigors to a product squad. Much of the work crosses into payments, from card authorisations to fraud rules. This is a backend-first role in a small, high-ownership team. You will work with the squad’s product manager and tech lead to take features from idea to production, and there is room to grow into full-stack work over time if that is where you want to go.
On any given week, you will be:
- Designing and building the backend services behind our loyalty features, from earning and redemption to partner integrations
- Making sure every points balance and reward is correct, traceable and reconciled, in every market
- Integrating with loyalty and payment partners so customers can earn and redeem the way they expect
- Keeping loyalty reliable: investigating failures, fixing root causes and improving the signals that tell us something is wrong
- Partnering with product, design and our mobile engineers to ship end-to-end features
- Reviewing code, protecting correctness with tests, and mentoring the engineers around you
Projects you’ll be working on at EatClub...
Sample initiatives you may lead:
- Building the earn-and-redeem flows that connect dining at an EatClub venue to the loyalty programs our customers already use
- Launching new loyalty partner integrations across Australia, the UK and New Zealand
- Owning and improving the ledger behind points and rewards so every balance is correct by design, not by manual adjustment
- Reconciliation tooling that lets anyone trace a reward from the meal to the partner statement
- Improving loyalty reliability and observability so failures are rare, visible and quickly understood
- Replacing manual processes and support tickets with features
You have….
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with a strong backend foundation in Java or a comparable modern language
- A track record of delivering significant projects end-to-end in production
- Experience designing and building APIs (REST and GraphQL) and the services behind them
- Solid SQL and NoSQL skills, including query tuning and performance work
- Experience integrating with third-party partners and making those integrations reliable
- Experience debugging intermittent production issues to root cause and preventing recurrence
- Proficiency in automated testing and writing testable code
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to work day to day with product and design
- Fluency with AI development tools and judgement about where they help and where they mislead
It would be extra awesome if you also had…
- A background in fintech, payments or another domain where correctness is measured in cents
- An understanding of ledgers and payments systems: how value is recorded, moved and reconciled, and what goes wrong when it isn’t
- Experience with loyalty, rewards or card-linked offer programs
- Experience with a serverless AWS stack (Lambda, API Gateway, AppSync, S3) and event-driven systems and Terraform
- An interest in growing into full-stack work; mobile experience is not required
- Experience building automated CI/CD pipelines
- A love of restaurants and dining out
You are…
- You are backend-first. You like the data model, the service boundary and the hard edge cases, and you want to get them right.
- You are rigorous about value. A point out of place bothers you, and you design so it cannot happen twice.
- You are a finisher. You take a problem from the ticket to the root cause to the shipped fix, and you check it landed.
- You are a systems thinker. You see how a change upstream will show up in a balance downstream.
- You are a good partner. You make the product manager’s and tech lead’s jobs easier, not harder.
- You love a challenge. You are not afraid to dive into a new technology or an unfamiliar codebase and come back understanding it.
- You enjoy open problems. You like shaping the solution, not just building it.
- You are hungry. You want to grow, and you are looking for a place that will support that growth.
If you do a good job…
- All code you implement hardens our systems, has high test coverage and improves the security and reliability of our codebase
- Every customer’s points and rewards are correct, every time, in every market, with no one in the loop to make it so.
- New loyalty partners launch with earn, redeem and reconciliation ready on day one.
- When something fails in loyalty, we know before the customer or the partner does.
- Loyalty questions stop arriving as support tickets.
- The engineers around you are better at building correct, well-tested services than they were.
Maybe this role is not for you if….
- You want to live in the mobile app. This role is backend-first.
- You find reconciliation and ledgers boring. They are the heart of this job.
- You prefer stability and clarity, clear playbooks, and unchanging priorities over a fast-moving environment.
- You like the structure and predictability you get at a large bank.
- You expect detailed instructions on how to design, prioritise, or sequence your work.
If you’re curious about what we’re building, you’re welcome to explore EatClub ahead of your interview. First-time users who choose to give it a try can use the code “ECAPPLY5” for an optional $5 voucher to test the experience. This is entirely voluntary and has no impact on your application or interview process.
One last note: even if you feel that you don’t meet all the criteria above, we encourage you to apply. Past work experience is not the only indicator of future success, and we are on the look out for hungry talent who wants to grow with us. So if you want to be a part of something remarkable, then we’re excited to hear from you.
