Job Description:

About the role:

The e-Business team within Application Operations Support (AOS) develops and supports IT applications with a focus on reliability and continuous improvement. Through innovation and collaboration, we look for new and better ways to deliver value to Sun Life.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong full-stack Java experience and hands-on iOS development skills. You will develop and support reliable applications across the web, mobile, API, and middleware layers while collaborating with teams across the organization. This role is well suited to a practical problem solver who enjoys development, continuous improvement, and ongoing application ownership throughout the application lifecycle.

What you will do:

• Develop, enhance, test, and support full-stack Java applications, services, and APIs, with ongoing ownership from implementation through production support.
• Develop and support native iOS applications.
• Support production and test environments by troubleshooting and debugging application issues, investigating incidents, restoring service, performing root-cause analysis, and remediating vulnerabilities.
• Collaborate with Software Engineers, Business Systems Analysts, and other partners to deliver quality solutions and maintain stable application environments.
• Contribute to monitoring, change management, system upgrades, disaster recovery, and continuous-improvement initiatives.

What you need to succeed:

• At least 10 years of experience developing and supporting back-end Java applications in an enterprise environment, with strong knowledge of core Java/J2EE, the Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and Spring MVC.
• At least 4 years of front-end development experience using React, JavaScript, and modern web technologies.
• At least 2 years of experience developing and supporting native iOS applications in an enterprise environment.
• Strong knowledge of web services and APIs, including REST, SOAP, JSON, and Java APIs.
• Working knowledge of middleware and application server technologies such as WebSphere or WebLogic.
• Experience troubleshooting production issues and working with databases such as SQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
• A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• You are comfortable learning new technologies and adapting to changing priorities.

Additional assets:

• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or AWS.
• Familiarity with iOS architecture patterns or third-party frameworks.
• Exposure to DevOps and delivery tools such as Jenkins, Artifactory, Bitbucket/Git, Gradle, Maven, CDD, or Ansible.
• Knowledge of web security, multi-factor authentication, Kafka, proxy technologies, ITIL, the software development lifecycle, or Agile ways of working.

Additional role requirements:

• The role includes on-call and after-hours support on a team rotation.

This role requires Reliability Security Clearance. In addition to a law enforcement inquiry and a credit check, as part of your application, the Government of Canada will ask if you lived or travelled outside of Canada for 6-consecutive months during the last 5 years, and you must account for all activities during this time.

Must be able to satisfactorily complete applicable background checks prior to the start date and during employment, in accordance with Sun Life’s policies and practices.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
