ABOUT THE CLIENT:
Our client is an established Australian signage business that designs, manufactures and installs custom signage, from large pylon signs and billboards through to building signage, wallpaper and small-format signs and stickers. The business manages every stage in-house, from design and engineering through to printing, CNC routing, fabrication and installation.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Construction Designer is responsible for the development, coordination and delivery of detailed proofing and construction-ready design documentation for signage projects. The role bridges the gap between concept design, engineering, manufacturing and on-site installation, ensuring every design is compliant, buildable and aligned with project specifications. Designs are reviewed internally and engineered before fabrication.
The successful candidate will need a practical understanding of how signs are fabricated and installed, and genuine hands-on skill setting up production files, not just logo or graphic design experience. They must produce their own work rather than relying on AI-generated output, follow the client's file setup standards, and be comfortable raising questions when information is unclear. Including strong written communication skills - effective interaction, resourceful, and able to find solutions independently, anticipating challenges and proactively addressing them, can be trusted to handle information, maintain confidentiality, and consistently deliver quality work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interpret project work orders, architectural drawings and specifications to produce construction-ready signage designs using Adobe Illustrator (preferred) or CorelDRAW.
- Design custom signage, including pylon signs, billboards, building signage and small-format signs, showing how each sign will be made, including the framework, structural supports and footing details.
- Develop detailed 2D shop drawings, fabrication drawings and installation details.
- Apply knowledge of materials, fixings and structural requirements to propose practical, buildable solutions that suit the sign, its location and the installation method.
- Prepare accurate production files for printing, CNC routing and laser cutting to the client's standards, including bleed, scaling, colour and output settings.
- Create wallpaper drops and large-format print files, saved as PDFs ready for the client's printers.
- Review and approve artwork for production suitability and constructability.
- Ensure designs meet structural, engineering and compliance requirements, including Australian Standards, building codes and WHS requirements, and allow for safe installation and construction practices.
- Identify design, manufacturing, installation and safety risks early in the project, recommend solutions and escalate issues where required.
- Liaise with internal teams, including Sales, Production, Project Management and Installation, to resolve design questions and keep projects moving.
- Revise designs based on internal review and engineering feedback before fabrication.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including revisions and approvals, and follow the client's file setup guides, templates and naming conventions.
- Manage multiple projects at once and deliver all design work on time and within project scope.
- Perform thorough self-checks to minimise print, fabrication and installation errors, and look for ways to improve processes and workflows.
Requirements
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills; Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and ask questions when information is incomplete.
- Strong English Language Skills - written & verbal
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Design, Engineering or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in signage, construction or fabrication design.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator; CorelDRAW is accepted as an alternative.
- Proven experience preparing production-ready files for printing, CNC routing and laser cutting, beyond logo or graphic design work.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, site plans and engineering documentation.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and installation processes, and of materials including aluminium, steel and composite products.
- Knowledge of signage systems, fixings and installation methods.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail, particularly with dimensions, measurements and specifications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
