To give you an idea of the scale you’ll be playing with: Global Reach: We power over 250,000 checkouts across 38 countries High Volume: Our systems process 2.4 billion receipts annually Deep Engagement: We manage 25 million daily loyalty transactions The role We are seeking a Senior Software Architect to serve as the technical authority for our Checkout Engine. This dual-focus role requires the strategic mindset of a Software Architect combined with the deep domain expertise of a Point of Sales (POS) Expert. You will be the primary driving force behind the engine's future design, ensuring our platform remains fast, fault-tolerant, and highly scalable under peak global retail loads. This is a hands-on leadership position. As an engineering leader, you will spend up to 50% of your time assisting in coding , primarily in Java, building prototypes, and pairing with teams to validate architectural decisions. Given the complexity of our domain, the role begins with a 6-month "Architectural Immersion" phase . This dedicated period allows you to dive deep into the codebase, master the Checkout Engine’s nuances, and earn the deep technical context required to confidently lead its long-term evolution. Core Responsibilities System Architecture : Define and own the entire architectural lifecycle of the Checkout Engine. You will design a scalable, cost-optimized cloud platform, backed by multi-tiered offline failovers down to the individual workstation Hands-on Leadership: Spend up to 50% of your time prototyping, writing core Java (25) code, and reviewing critical features. You will mentor developers and guide teams through architectural transformations. Organizational Alignment: Act as a key voice in our cross-company Architecture Chapter. You’ll use visual diagrams and clear narratives to align engineering teams, product strategy, and stakeholders around a unified technical vision. AI-Assisted Development: Champion and utilize AI agentic support in the software development process, guiding the team to leverage these tools for continuous learning, prototyping, and enhanced coding efficiency What you bring We are looking for a seasoned engineering leader who loves complex distributed systems. Ideally, you have: Deep Retail Tech Roots: A strong background in the retail/SaaS domain, with a solid understanding of POS environments and edge constraints Java (25) & Architecture Mastery: Expert-level Java skills paired with a deep understanding of modern architectural patterns (Microservices, Event-Driven architecture, etc.) Cloud Native Mindset: Deep familiarity with cloud ecosystems (ideally GCP) and a strong grasp of cost-efficient, scalable system design The Mind of a Mentor: 10+ years of engineering experience, with a track record of leading agile practices and helping developers grow Ready to apply?
