This role analyzes complex inventory transactions and account fluctuations, identifies and resolves discrepancies, and supports improvements to inventory-related processes and systems. The position partners closely with Accounting, Merchandising, Distribution Centers, Retail Operations, Loss Prevention, Accounts Payable, Transportation, and IT. The successful candidate demonstrates strong inventory accounting knowledge, advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare and reconcile inventory-related journal entries, accruals, reserves, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Reconcile inventory subledger activity to the general ledger, including JDA-to-SAP posting differences, and investigate and resolve system, timing, and transaction-level variances.
  • Calculate and validate key inventory reserves, including Lower of Cost or Market (LOCM) and Sales Return Reserve, including quarterly lookbacks for audit support.
  • Calculate monthly accruals for partnership royalties and prepare quarterly payment approvals based on contractual obligations and retail sales.
  • Analyze and reconcile Goods Receipt/Invoice Receipt activity on a weekly and monthly basis, researching and resolving discrepancies and aged items in partnership with cross-functional teams.
  • Perform monthly inventory and cost-of-goods-sold fluctuation analysis, identify unusual trends or discrepancies, and provide clear explanations of material balance-sheet and P&L movements.
  • Support quarterly and annual physical inventory counts, researching and resolving variances in partnership with Loss Prevention, store, and distribution center teams.
  • Partner with distribution centers, merchandising, and marketing teams on new store openings, sourcing activities, and SKU changes.
  • Research complex inventory, costing, receiving, and financial-reporting discrepancies; determine root causes and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Identify and implement process, reporting, control, and system improvements, including participation in UAT and automation initiatives.
  • Support interim and year-end audit activities by preparing documentation and responding to auditor requests, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support a timely and disciplined month-end and quarter-end close.
  • Assist in developing and documenting accounting processes and strengthening internal controls.
  • Provide timely and accurate accounting information to internal stakeholders as needed.
  • Serve as a subject-matter resource for inventory accounting processes and provide guidance to team members and cross-functional business partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, and inventory or cost accounting within an ERP environment; retail industry and SAP experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold, accruals, reserves, and internal controls.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail; able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, complex formulas, and analysis of large data sets.
  • Deadline-driven with the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across departments.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and committed to supporting the company’s growth and success.

WORKING CONDITIONS
