About the Company

BMI is a mission-driven organization at the forefront of music rights and creator advocacy. Celebrating over 80 years of service to songwriters, composers, music publishers and businesses, BMI is a global leader in music rights management. Currently representing the public performance rights in over 25 million musical works created and owned by more than 1.4 million artists. BMI negotiates music license agreements and distributes the fees it generates as royalties to its affiliated writers and publishers when their songs are publicly performed.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Tax Manager to help lead BMI’s corporate tax compliance, provision, reporting and planning activities. This hands-on role offers broad exposure across domestic income tax, federal, state, local and international tax matters, as well as information reporting and unclaimed property.

You’ll own key tax workstreams, review work prepared by others, partner closely with teams across Finance and Accounting, and serve as a trusted resource on evolving tax requirements. You’ll also have the opportunity to improve how the function operates through stronger processes, automation and technology.

This role is a great fit for someone who is hands-on, and enjoys both the technical side of tax and the opportunity to build more efficient, scalable ways of working.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead federal, state and local tax compliance, including income and franchise, sales and use, property, gross receipts and other applicable taxes.
  • Prepare and review tax returns, workpapers, payments and quarterly estimated payments, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and appropriate documentation.
  • Review transactional tax work prepared by other team members and provide guidance and feedback to support accurate and compliant filings.
  • Monitor multi-state nexus and registration requirements and coordinate new state tax registrations as BMI’s business activity expands.
  • Research evolving tax laws and technical issues, assess their impact on BMI, and document recommendations and tax positions.
  • Respond to and resolve notices and correspondence from federal, state and local taxing authorities.
  • Support quarterly and annual income tax provision activities under ASC 740, including deferred tax analysis and effective tax rate reconciliations.
  • Identify and help implement tax planning opportunities that appropriately manage tax liability and risk.
  • Support tax matters related to mergers, acquisitions, entity formations, dissolutions and other corporate restructuring activities, as needed.
  • Partner with Accounts Payable and Royalty Accounting on information reporting, including Forms 1099, 1042 and 1042-S, foreign-payee withholding, and W-9/W-8 documentation.
  • Manage BMI’s unclaimed property compliance program, including state filings, required due diligence and outreach, and recordkeeping.
  • Support international tax and reporting requirements, including FBAR and other applicable foreign information returns, Pillar II reporting, withholding tax and transfer pricing matters.
  • Partner with the International Controller to support statutory financial reporting requirements for international subsidiaries, as needed.
  • Coordinate relationships with outside tax advisors, consultants and tax technology vendors, including oversight of engagements and related budgets.
  • Lead process improvement and automation initiatives that make tax and accounting processes more efficient, accurate and scalable.
  • Develop and maintain tax policies, procedures and controls that reflect current regulatory requirements and internal controls.
  • Serve as a project lead for departmental initiatives and special projects.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • 5–7 years of progressive corporate tax experience, with proven experience in domestic income tax.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state and local tax requirements, with demonstrated ability to research complex tax matters and translate findings into practical recommendations.
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax returns and supporting tax compliance processes.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and project management skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to non-tax audiences.
  • A high degree of integrity, discretion and sound judgment when handling sensitive financial information.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • CPA license.
  • Master’s degree in Taxation.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • International tax experience.
  • Multi-state franchise, sales and use, and property tax compliance experience.
  • Experience with Oracle EBS or a similar ERP platform.
