“AECOM has given me the opportunities, support and trust to build a career that's aligned with my ambitions and interests.” Lauren Spring, Sector Manager & Growth Lead - Environment, WA

At AECOM, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to build on an established ecology practice and shape its next phase of growth in Western Australia. We are looking for a Team Manager - Ecology to lead our team of botanists and zoologists, strengthen our technical capability and expand the contribution our ecology services make to projects across the region.

This is a senior leadership opportunity that combines your strong understanding of WA’s environmental landscape, regulatory framework and approval pathways with your passion for leading people, building client relationships and growing a successful local team and market presence. Combining technical expertise with commercial acumen and strong client relationships, you will play a pivotal role in securing new work, developing project pipelines and positioning ecology as a key service offering.

You will be joining a national environmental business with established relationships across the renewable energy, water, Defence, transport and resource sectors. Through AECOM’s national ecology network, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with technical leaders across Australia and contribute to a diverse range of projects while driving business development and expanding our ecology project portfolio.

The role combines office and fieldwork, providing opportunities to stay connected to the technical work and projects your team delivers.

What will a day in this role look like?

  • Lead and grow the ecology team: Provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team of botanists and zoologists, fostering a collaborative culture focused on technical excellence, professional development and high-quality project delivery.

  • Build team capability: Recruit, mentor and develop team members, strengthening our technical expertise and capacity to meet current and future project demands.

  • Drive business development: Identify and pursue new opportunities across WA, develop client relationships and contribute to tenders, proposals and strategic business development initiatives.

  • Build a strong project pipeline: Proactively identify upcoming projects, maintain a forward workload and establish a sustainable pipeline of ecology work across a range of sectors and clients.

  • Provide technical leadership: Oversee and guide botanical and zoological surveys, ecological assessments, reporting and environmental approvals to ensure high-quality, practical and commercially sound outcomes.

  • Strengthen client relationships: Build trusted relationships with existing and prospective clients, understand their needs and deliver solutions that support long-term partnerships.

  • Support commercial performance: Contribute to project planning, resource allocation, budgets, fee proposals and financial performance, balancing technical quality with efficient project delivery.

  • Shape the future of the service line: Identify opportunities to expand our ecology offering, improve systems and processes, and strengthen our market presence across Western Australia.

What are we looking for from you?

  • Extensive ecological consulting experience, ideally with a strong background in the Western Australian environmental sector.

  • Experience across flora and fauna, with the technical understanding to lead and integrate the work of botanists and zoologists.

  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring or developing multidisciplinary technical teams.

  • A strong understanding of WA environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, approval pathways and relevant government stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to develop client relationships, contribute to winning new work and identify opportunities for business growth.

  • Commercial awareness, including experience with proposals, project budgets, resource planning and project delivery.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage confidently with clients, regulators, colleagues and senior leadership.

  • A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset and a genuine interest in building a team, developing people and growing a successful ecology practice.

This role will suit a senior ecologist ready to take the next step into a broader leadership position, or an established ecology leader looking for the opportunity to build a team, influence business strategy and make a tangible contribution to the growth of our WA operations

Why you’ll love working with us

  • Flexible work arrangements, including alternative start/finish times, job-sharing and hybrid work options

  • Long service, volunteer and representation leave

  • Swap public holidays – swap Easter or other holidays for ones that suit you better

  • Continuous learning and growth - lunch and learns, professional development courses, financial study assistance, 5 days paid study leave, global career opportunities
