Make a meaningful difference with us
We’re looking for someone who wants to make the world a little better through small moments that leave big impacts.
As a Technical Accountant, you’ll step into a broad, hands-on role where curiosity, critical thinking and fresh ideas are genuinely valued. Working closely with the Technical Accounting Manager and teams across the business, you’ll analyse complex transactions, solve challenging accounting issues, support statutory reporting and strengthen financial reporting practices across the UnitingCare Queensland Group.
You’ll gain exposure to a diverse and complex group operating across health, aged care, retirement living, community and disability services, providing opportunities to work on a wide variety of accounting, reporting and strategic business matters.
If you’re self-motivated, accountable and confident taking ownership without needing constant direction, this is an opportunity to make a real impact beyond the scope of a traditional financial accounting role. We are seeking someone with strong intellectual curiosity, a passion for understanding how businesses, transactions and systems work, and a genuine desire to learn. You’ll enjoy exploring the “why” behind complex issues, continuously developing your technical expertise and contributing fresh thinking to the way we solve problems and improve processes.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys asking questions, understanding how things work, and going beyond the numbers to understand the underlying business, commercial and operational drivers behind transactions and outcomes.
Please note, this position is Full Time, Permanent. Flexibility is important to us, and we know it is to you, too - this role supports hybrid working by agreement.
Your part in our UnitingCare team:
- Support the preparation of Group and entity general-purpose financial statements, supporting workpapers, key judgements, estimates and disclosures in line with Australian Accounting Standards.
- Prepare technical accounting analysis and position papers for routine and complex transactions, and support the development of practical accounting policies, guidance and reporting controls.
- Partner with Finance teams, business stakeholders and external auditors to resolve accounting queries, coordinate audit deliverables and improve reporting quality, balance sheet integrity and audit readiness.
- Support reviews of key balance sheet balances and work with Finance teams to investigate and resolve aged, unusual or unsupported items, improving the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
- Provide technical accounting support for strategic initiatives such as restructures, capital developments, financing arrangements, significant contracts and system implementations, contributing to practical and commercially aligned outcomes.
What makes a difference for us?
- Satisfy the relevant probity checks required by legislation or policies. This may include: a Nationally Coordinated Police Check, Right to Work in Australia, Insolvency Check.
- Tertiary qualification in business or accounting, with CA or CPA qualification.
- Minimum five years’ experience in external audit, statutory financial reporting, technical accounting or financial accounting; Big 4 or mid-tier audit experience will be highly regarded.
- Strong working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, including practical experience preparing statutory financial statements, accounting workpapers, and technical accounting analysis. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgement and communicate complex accounting matters clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse complex financial information, identify accounting issues and recommend practical solutions.
- Experience in not-for-profit, health, aged care, community or disability services, or retirement villages highly regarded.
