Technical Business Analyst (Data)
Location: Sydney, NSW (Remote)
Job Type: Contract Experience: 7+ years
Eligibility: Australian Citizens / PR holders only
About the Role
Our client is looking for an experienced Technical Business Analyst (Data) to join a high-performing data and analytics team on a contract basis. You will act as the bridge between business stakeholders and technical data teams, translating business needs into clear, well-defined data requirements, mappings and specifications that engineers, architects and analysts can build against.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable in a workshop with senior stakeholders and in a SQL editor profiling source data. You will shape data solutions end to end, from discovery and requirements through to testing and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with business and technical stakeholders to elicit, analyze and document data and reporting requirements
- Translate business needs into functional and technical specifications, user stories and acceptance criteria
- Perform source system analysis and data profiling using SQL to assess data quality, structure and completeness
- Produce source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries, business glossaries and data lineage documentation
- Work closely with data engineers, data architects and BI developers to design and deliver data pipelines, data models and reports
- Define and validate business rules, transformation logic and data quality checks
- Support data migration, integration and data warehouse / Lakehouse initiatives
- Plan and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including preparing test cases and validating outputs against requirements
- Identify data gaps, risks and dependencies, and recommend practical solutions
- Support data governance, metadata management and data privacy practices
- Contribute to Agile ceremonies, including backlog refinement, sprint planning and show-and-tells
- Provide clear status updates and manage stakeholder expectations throughout delivery
Essential Skills and Experience
- 7+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, with a strong focus on data, analytics or data platform projects
- Strong SQL skills for querying, profiling, validating and reconciling data
- Proven experience writing source-to-target mappings and data transformation specifications
- Solid understanding of data warehousing, data modelling (dimensional, relational) and ETL / ELT concepts
- Experience working with modern cloud data platforms (for example Azure, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks or Microsoft Fabric)
- Experience gathering requirements for BI and reporting solutions (for example Power BI, Tableau or similar)
- Strong knowledge of data quality, data governance and metadata management principles
- Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery environments
- Excellent documentation skills, including BRDs, FRDs, user stories, process flows and data models
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Desirable Skills
- Experience with data catalogue or governance tools (for example Microsoft Purview, Collibra or Alation)
- Familiarity with transformation tools such as dbt, Azure Data Factory or similar orchestration tooling
- Working knowledge of Python for data analysis
- Experience with Jira and Confluence
- Exposure to data migration programs or large-scale data platform modernisation
- Industry experience in financial services, government, utilities, retail or similar data-rich sectors
- Relevant certifications (for example CBAP, IIBA-CBDA, Azure Data Fundamentals or similar)
