  • Advance in-vehicle infotainment, safety, efficiency, and enjoyment

About the Role
We are looking for a Technical Lead to join HARMAN’s engineering team in Japan, working on software solutions for the next generation of software-defined vehicles—building on HARMAN’s proven leadership in Over-the-Air (OTA) vehicle software updates.

HARMAN’s OTA technology is trusted by leading automotive OEMs and already deployed across millions of vehicles worldwide.

You will combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership—guiding technical direction, mentoring engineers, and working closely with automotive customers in Japan and HARMAN’s global teams.

We welcome experienced engineers ready to take the next step into broader technical leadership.

Your Team
You will join a small, experienced engineering team in Japan, reporting to the Development Manager in Japan and working closely with HARMAN teams around the world.

Our small team means your contribution is visible and your ideas matter, while giving you access to the expertise and resources of HARMAN’s global organization. We value open communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the design and development of end-to-end automotive OTA solutions across cloud and on-premise environments.
  • Work with customers to understand and clarify technical requirements and collaborate with global engineering teams to deliver solutions.
  • Stay hands-on—develop customer features, improve our products, build prototypes, and evaluate technical feasibility.
  • Investigate complex technical issues and drive improvements in software quality and reliability.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring, and share knowledge with engineers, QA, and technical support teams.
  • Improve engineering productivity through CI/CD, automated testing, AI-assisted development tools, and modern engineering practices.
  • Support the integration and deployment of our solutions across cloud and on-premise environments.

What You Need

  • BSc. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong hands-on Java experience, including design, development, review, and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of C/C++, with the ability to understand, review, and debug code.
  • Good understanding of Web/backend and Embedded systems and how they interact.
  • Good understanding of software architecture, Linux, and networking.
  • Experience leading technical decisions, mentoring engineers, and working directly with customers to translate requirements into solutions.
  • Professional-level Japanese communication skills and English sufficient for global meetings, collaboration, and technical documentation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus; candidates are not expected to match all:
  • Experience with automotive software, OTA solutions, or software-defined vehicles.
  • Deep development experience in either web/backend or embedded systems.
  • Experience developing software for embedded Linux, Android, or QNX.
  • Experience with backend and automated testing technologies such as Spring Boot, JUnit, or Cucumber.
  • Experience with CI/CD, containerization, orchestration, or cloud platforms such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience with additional web, scripting, or data technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, Python, shell scripting, SQL, or Elasticsearch.

What We Offer

  • We offer an authentic, diverse, equal, and inclusive work environment that fosters and encourages professional and personal development in a truly global organization.
  • You will work on products and services that touch people’s lives and will change the industrial standards, being a part of the transformations in our industry.
  • Our work environments are fast paced, challenging, empowering, collaborative, flexible and exciting.
  • We offer our own HARMAN University with regular updates on the new technologies and trends by utilizing various sessions organized by Self Learning and Development Trainings to help grow and advance talent.
  • We offer competitive compensation/benefit programs and recognition programs.
