At PetVet Care Centers, our mission is to improve the lives of animals and people — providing exceptional and compassionate care at every stage — for all the moments that matter.
Because life is better with pets.
We deliver the Ultimate Care Experience — every pet, every client, every time. That starts with a Culture of Care that supports our team members as much as the pets and clients we serve.
With more than 420 locally led hospitals and over 11,000 team members nationwide, we offer:
- Local autonomy with national support
- Career mobility and development opportunities
- A collaborative, inclusive environment where your wellbeing comes first
You care for pets. We care for you.
Position Overview
PetVet Care Centers is seeking an accomplished Vice President of Operations to lead the performance of approximately 100 veterinary hospitals through six Regional Directors. This executive is accountable for the portfolio's operating and financial results, advances the Care Experience, and translates enterprise strategy into disciplined regional and hospital execution while respecting clinical autonomy, local culture, and community relationships.
The Vice President will build a high-performing regional leadership team, establish a clear operating cadence, strengthen the leadership pipeline, and partner closely with medical leaders and Center Support Team functions. The successful candidate combines enterprise perspective, financial rigor, and visible field leadership with a genuine commitment to veterinary professionals, pets, clients, and local teams and models PetVet’s CARE values in daily decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Leadership and Execution
- Lead, coach, and hold accountable six Regional Directors responsible for approximately 100 general practice, emergency, specialty, and/or equine hospitals, setting clear expectations while leading with compassion and respect.
- Translate enterprise priorities into clear regional and hospital operating plans, performance expectations, decision rights, and accountability.
- Establish a disciplined operating cadence that includes scorecards, business reviews, field visits, action plans, and timely escalation of material risks and performance gaps.
- Create consistent operating standards while allowing appropriate flexibility for each hospital's market, culture, and clinical model.
- Identify systemic barriers, share effective practices across regions, and ensure solutions are implemented, sustained, and measured.
Care Experience and Medical Partnership
- Make the Ultimate Care Experience a practical operating standard across the portfolio, connecting compassionate interactions with reliable access, communication, service recovery, and continuity of care.
- Build trusted partnerships with medical leadership and veterinarians to align operational resources with high-quality medicine, patient safety, clinician effectiveness, team well-being, access, and capacity.
- Use client feedback and Care Experience measures to identify trends, address root causes, and improve loyalty and trust.
- Remove administrative and operational obstacles so hospital teams can focus on patients and clients.
Financial Performance and Growth
- Own portfolio performance, including revenue growth, profitability, labor management, operating expenses, capital priorities, and return on investment.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, monthly and quarterly business reviews, and performance-improvement planning with Regional Directors and Finance.
- Use operational, financial, workforce, and client data to identify trends, address performance gaps, allocate resources, and make timely tradeoffs.
- Develop organic-growth plans that improve appointment availability, clinician productivity, service mix, client retention, and local market reach.
- Lead structured recovery plans for underperforming hospitals and regions, with clear milestones, ownership, and follow-through.
- Support the evaluation, integration, stabilization, and performance of newly acquired or affiliated hospitals, as applicable.
People and Culture Leadership
- Recruit, develop, and retain Regional Directors who build engaged, accountable hospital leadership teams, lead with PetVet’s CARE values and consistently deliver results.
- Set clear expectations, provide candid and respectful coaching, recognize performance, and address capability or performance gaps promptly.
- Build succession depth for Regional Director and hospital leadership roles; regularly review talent, readiness, development plans, and retention risks.
- Partner with People and Culture on workforce planning, organizational design, leadership development, employee relations, engagement, retention, and talent attraction.
- Maintain a regular presence in hospitals, listen to team members, and strengthen trust between local teams and the Center Support Team.
- Model PetVet's CARE values and reinforce an inclusive culture of ownership, collaboration, learning, and high performance.
Center Support Team and Enterprise Leadership
- Serve as the portfolio's accountable business partner to Center Support Team functions, including Finance, People and Culture, Medical Operations, Marketing, Talent Acquisition, Technology, Procurement, Legal, and other teams.
- Clarify portfolio priorities, resource needs, service expectations, and shared accountabilities so field and Center Support Team leaders operate as one organization.
- Sponsor enterprise initiatives and lead change adoption across regions, ensuring clear communication, local ownership, and measurable results.
- Promote compliance with employment, safety, privacy, veterinary, and business requirements; ensure timely response to significant operational, reputational, or continuity risks.
- Communicate portfolio performance, talent, risks, opportunities, and resource requirements clearly to executive leadership with candor and transparency.
Leadership Capabilities
- Enterprise-minded operator who connects strategy, people, and execution across a complex portfolio and brings teams together.
- Developer of senior leaders who builds bench strength, delegates effectively, and creates clear and fair accountability for outcomes.
- Financially and analytically rigorous decision-maker with sound judgment and a bias toward timely action.
- Relationship-centered partner to veterinarians, medical leaders, hospital teams, Center Support Team leaders, and executive stakeholders.
- Visible, credible field leader who listens, communicates clearly, and remains calm through change or disruption.
- Committed to the Care Experience, ethical leadership, high-quality medicine, and the well-being of veterinary teams.
Qualifications (Required)
- Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, operations, finance, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Typically 12+ of progressive operational leadership experience, including substantial responsibility for large, geographically dispersed, multi-site operations.
- Demonstrated success leading senior multi-unit leaders and building accountability through a layered field organization.
- Ownership of a complex P&L and a record of delivering profitable growth, operational improvement, and turnaround results.
- Experience establishing operating cadences, using performance data, leading organizational change, and developing leadership succession.
- Experience in veterinary medicine, human healthcare, dental services, retail healthcare, hospitality, or another distributed service organization strongly preferred.
- Experience evaluating or integrating acquisitions and standardizing operations without eroding local strengths is advantageous.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50% to hospitals and company meetings.
