Volunteer News Assistant

Location: Remote

Type: Volunteer, Unpaid

Organization: Bantu Gazette

Ideal Candidate: Journalism student

About Bantu Gazette

Bantu Gazette is a pan-African media platform covering Africa’s development, business, governance, technology, climate, culture, identity, diaspora, and global connections. Our journalism focuses on the people, ideas, institutions, and developments shaping Africa’s future. We aim to produce accurate, balanced, and engaging reporting that gives African perspectives greater visibility while examining the opportunities and challenges influencing the continent’s development.

About the Role

Bantu Gazette is looking for a Volunteer News Assistant to support our editorial team with research, reporting, writing, and digital news production.

This remote, unpaid position is designed primarily for journalism students, recent graduates, and aspiring journalists who want practical newsroom experience and an opportunity to develop their reporting and writing skills while contributing to a growing African media platform.

The News Assistant will work with the editorial team on stories covering Africa and the African diaspora. The role offers exposure to the editorial process from identifying potential stories and conducting research to drafting articles and preparing content for publication.

Key Responsibilities

The Volunteer News Assistant may support the newsroom through the following activities.

  • Research current events, reports, announcements, data, and emerging stories related to Africa and the African diaspora.
  • Identify credible primary and secondary sources and assist with fact-checking information before publication.
  • Draft news articles, short features, briefs, and other editorial content under the guidance of the editorial team.
  • Edit and refine copy for accuracy, structure, readability, and consistency with Bantu Gazette’s editorial standards.
  • Assist editors with background research for interviews, features, and developing stories.
  • Monitor relevant institutions, organizations, research bodies, and public sources for potential story ideas.
  • Support basic video and digital news production, including script preparation, content planning, and segment organization.
  • Participate in editorial discussions and contribute ideas for stories that fit Bantu Gazette’s coverage priorities.
  • Support the preparation of editorial and communications materials when required.

Who We Are Looking For

We particularly welcome applications from students currently studying journalism, media, communications, or a related field who want practical experience alongside their studies.

Candidates should demonstrate strong writing and communication skills, with an ability to communicate information accurately and engagingly.

Strong research skills and an understanding of credible sourcing, verification, and journalistic ethics are equally valuable.

Applicants should also have a strong interest in African affairs, including development, business, governance, technology, climate, culture, and the African diaspora.

Previous journalism or media experience can be beneficial, although students and emerging journalists who can demonstrate strong potential through university work, student media, independent writing, blogging, or other relevant projects are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have reliable internet access and be comfortable working independently within a remote and collaborative editorial environment.

What You Will Gain

The role provides an opportunity to build practical newsroom experience while working on stories intended for a public audience.

Selected volunteers will have opportunities to strengthen their research, fact-checking, news writing, editing, and digital journalism skills.

Contributors may also build a portfolio of published work through Bantu Gazette, subject to editorial standards and publication decisions.

The experience can be particularly valuable for journalism students seeking to complement academic training with practical exposure to an active digital newsroom covering African affairs.

Commitment

This is a remote and unpaid volunteer position. The expected weekly commitment and duration will be agreed with selected candidates based on their availability and Bantu Gazette’s editorial needs.

Bantu Gazette values accuracy, editorial independence, responsible journalism, respect for sources, and thoughtful coverage of Africa and its global communities.
