About The Company
Capital One is using technology, data, and artificial intelligence to change banking for good. With a long history of applying machine learning to real-time, personalized customer experiences, the company continues to invest in advanced infrastructure and exceptional technical talent. Its AI capabilities help customers and associates with experiences ranging from identifying unusual transactions to getting answers in real time. Capital One is committed to developing responsible, reliable, and scalable AI systems that make banking simpler and more human.
The Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team works with partners across Capital One to advance AI science and engineering. The team develops and deploys proprietary models and platforms that enable business teams to build valuable AI-powered products for millions of customers and associates.
About The Role
Capital One is seeking an AI Engineer 4 to help build and advance foundational AI systems, with a focus on AI foundations and vision-language model (VLM) customization. You will partner with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to create AI-powered products and production platforms. The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, translating research into dependable systems that meet business needs.
You will contribute to the architecture and technical direction of complex AI systems, balancing performance, scalability, cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy. You will work with technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, vector databases, and PyTorch, while helping ensure that deployed solutions are observable, maintainable, secure, responsible, and aligned with applicable governance requirements.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least four years of experience developing AI or machine learning algorithms or technologies; or a relevant master’s degree and at least two years of that experience. Applicants must also have at least four years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.
Preferred qualifications include experience leading AI system development and making trade-offs among cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy; deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms; and designing, delivering, and supporting AI services. Experience with model inference, similarity search, vector databases, guardrails, memory, agentic workflows, and training or inference optimization is valued. Familiarity with distributed systems, large-scale model evaluation, AI governance, lineage tracking, and automated retraining is also beneficial. Successful candidates bring strong engineering and mathematical foundations, curiosity about current research, sound judgment in applying new techniques, and the ability to communicate clearly and influence architectural decisions.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI components, including foundation-model training, large language model inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability. Develop optimization approaches that improve the performance and efficiency of production AI systems. Own architecture for complex solutions and contribute to the long-term roadmap for foundational AI at Capital One.
Define and maintain service-level objectives for reliability, including latency, uptime, and model performance drift. Partner with infrastructure engineering to improve GPU and TPU utilization and accelerate inference pipelines. Lead technical reviews for AI deployments, addressing security, data governance, and compliance. Collaborate across disciplines, investigate complex problems, share emerging ideas, and mentor colleagues in scalable design, performance tuning, and moving research into production.
Benefits
This role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives, subject to the applicable plan. Capital One provides a comprehensive benefits program supporting health, financial security, and overall well-being. Eligibility depends on factors including employment status and management level. The posted annual salary ranges are $197,300–$225,100 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, and $215,200–$245,600 in New York, New York, and San Jose, California. Compensation for other locations may differ; the actual salary offer will be stated in the offer letter. Capital One will consider sponsorship for qualified applicants requiring employment authorization.
Equal Opportunity
Capital One is an equal opportunity employer committed to non-discrimination in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, including protections for individuals with disabilities and veterans. The company maintains a drug-free workplace and considers qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable laws.
