About The Company

Capital One is building responsible, reliable AI systems that help transform banking. The company has a long history of applying machine learning to create timely, personalized customer experiences, from identifying unusual transactions to answering questions in real time. Its investments in technology, infrastructure, and talent support the development of advanced AI capabilities and scalable platforms. The Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team works with partners across Capital One to advance AI science and engineering, develop proprietary solutions, and help teams deliver meaningful value to millions of customers and associates.

About The Role

Capital One is seeking an AI Engineer 4 to design and deliver foundational AI systems and production-ready experiences. In this senior technical role, you will work with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to build AI-powered products and infrastructure. You will contribute to the technical direction and long-term roadmap for AI at Capital One, translating emerging research into reliable, secure, and scalable applications. Your work will span foundation model training, large language model inference, agentic workflows, evaluation, and system optimization. You will take ownership of complex architectures while ensuring that systems are observable, maintainable, responsible, and aligned with customer and business needs.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least four years of experience developing AI or machine-learning algorithms or technologies; alternatively, a relevant master’s degree and at least two years of experience. Candidates must also have at least four years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Preferred qualifications include experience leading AI system development and making tradeoffs among cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy; deploying responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms; and designing, delivering, and supporting AI services. Relevant expertise may include LLM inference, similarity search, vector databases, guardrails, memory, agentic systems, and training or inference optimization. Experience with distributed systems at petabyte scale, model governance, lineage tracking, automated retraining, GPU or TPU utilization, and influencing architecture across products is valued. A strong engineering and mathematical foundation, curiosity about current AI research, sound judgment, and the ability to bring clarity to complex problems are important for success.

Responsibilities

  • Partner across disciplines to deliver AI products that improve how associates work and how customers interact with Capital One.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI components, including model training and inference, agents, multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
  • Use open-source and cloud technologies, which may include AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, vector databases, and PyTorch.
  • Develop and apply optimization techniques that improve production system scalability, hardware utilization, latency, throughput, and cost.
  • Own end-to-end architecture for complex AI systems and define service-level objectives for reliability, uptime, latency, and model performance drift.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to improve accelerator utilization and inference pipelines, and lead deployment reviews covering security, data governance, and compliance.
  • Contribute to the AI technical roadmap and mentor colleagues in scalable design, performance tuning, and moving research into production.

Benefits

The role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives, depending on the applicable plan. Capital One offers a comprehensive benefits program supporting health, financial security, and overall well-being. Eligibility varies by employment status and management level. The listed full-time annual salary ranges are $197,300–$225,100 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, and $215,200–$245,600 in New York, New York; San Francisco, California; and San Jose, California. Pay for other locations may differ, and the specific compensation offer will be confirmed in the offer letter. Capital One will consider sponsorship for a qualified applicant seeking new employment authorization.

Equal Opportunity

The company maintains a drug-free workplace and considers qualified applicants with criminal histories in accordance with applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available for candidates who need them during the application or recruiting process. This role is expected to accept applications for at least five business days.
