Backend Engineer

We’re working with an ambitious AI technology company developing the foundational infrastructure that allows intelligent software agents to interact securely with enterprise systems and applications.

Its platform bridges AI agents with the tools, data, and workflows organizations rely on, combining identity management, secure connectivity, access control, and infrastructure into a unified environment. The goal is to make AI-driven operations dependable, secure, and scalable across complex enterprise ecosystems.

The Opportunity

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll play a key role in developing the backend services and infrastructure that enable AI agents to function safely and efficiently within enterprise environments. You’ll contribute across distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, enterprise software integrations, identity and access management, and production platform engineering. Your work will help determine how AI agents authenticate with business applications, navigate permissions, perform actions, and operate consistently in real-world production environments.

This is a hands-on engineering role with ownership across system design, infrastructure development, service reliability, enterprise integrations, and the engineering foundations needed to scale a growing platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop backend services and foundational infrastructure for AI-powered applications and enterprise deployments.
• Build identity and access management capabilities, including authentication, authorization, role-based permissions, tenant isolation, and account lifecycle management.
• Develop secure integration layers connecting AI agents with enterprise tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, email, and telephony services.
• Implement connectors and integration services for business-critical platforms, including NetSuite, SharePoint, Google Drive, SAP, Oracle, and related enterprise systems.
• Design APIs, shared services, and reusable platform components that simplify secure interactions between AI agents and external applications.
• Develop automation and infrastructure supporting customer onboarding, provisioning, configuration, deployment, and environment administration.
• Take ownership of services throughout their lifecycle, from technical design and implementation to production deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance.
• Improve platform performance, scalability, fault tolerance, and service availability as adoption and infrastructure demands increase.
• Partner with AI, security, product, and infrastructure teams to establish architectural standards, define service interfaces, and build reusable engineering capabilities.
• Streamline infrastructure operations through automation of deployments, configuration management, environment setup, and recurring operational tasks.
• Implement security safeguards for data separation, permissions, auditability, and actions initiated by AI agents.
• Evaluate technical approaches and contribute to architectural decisions as new enterprise requirements and use cases emerge.
• Lead engineering projects from initial technical exploration through implementation, launch, and ongoing production ownership.
• Establish best practices for infrastructure management, observability, reliability, and developer tooling across the engineering organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 2+ years of professional experience in backend development, infrastructure engineering, distributed systems, cloud platforms, or production software engineering.
• Experience developing and maintaining production systems with demanding requirements for security, availability, performance, and scalability.
• Strong knowledge of API design, distributed architectures, authentication and authorization, identity and access management, RBAC, and access-control principles.
• Practical experience with cloud infrastructure, deployment processes, monitoring, observability, and production operations.
• Demonstrated ability to take technical initiatives from concept and architecture through implementation, release, and ongoing support.
• Familiarity with enterprise security practices, compliance frameworks, SOC 2, data governance, or access management is beneficial.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering and product disciplines.
• Adaptability and a willingness to work in a fast-paced environment where priorities, systems, and technical challenges evolve.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base Salary: $255,000 – $310,000, depending on experience and qualifications
• Location: San Francisco, CA, Hybrid
