Commissioning Engineer — AI Data Center Liquid Cooling
Schedule: Two weeks onsite, followed by one week offsite, for candidates who do not wish to relocate. Relocation assistance is available for candidates interested in moving near a project site. Project locations: Pecos, TX; Fort Stockton, TX; and Point Pleasant, WV.
Seeking Mechanical Commissioning Engineers to test the liquid cooling infrastructure supporting high-density AI and high-performance computing data centers. The primary focus is liquid-to-chip cooling and its supporting distribution systems. This field-based role supports Level 3 through Level 5 (L3–L5) commissioning, from installation verification and equipment startup through functional and integrated systems testing.
Responsibilities
- Review mechanical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment submittals, specifications, controls sequences, and commissioning scripts for liquid cooling systems.
- Walk down coolant distribution units (CDUs), manifolds, piping networks, valves, sensors, leak detection devices, and associated heat rejection connections. Identify installation deficiencies and incomplete work before startup.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, contractors, and design engineers on startup procedures for direct-to-chip cooling systems and other project-specific liquid cooling equipment, including rear-door heat exchangers or immersion cooling systems where installed.
- Review flushing, pressure testing, water treatment, and testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) documentation where applicable. Verify that systems are ready for functional testing.
- Execute and document tests of coolant flow, differential pressure, temperature control, leak detection, alarms, and equipment response across the cooling distribution path.
- Verify CDU operation, controls, and transitions between normal and failure conditions according to approved sequences of operation and test scripts.
- Confirm that BMS points, graphics, alarms, and trends accurately represent equipment and sensor behavior observed in the field.
- Participate in IST with electrical and controls teams to verify cooling response during simulated power loss, pump or CDU failure, changes in thermal load, and recovery to normal operation.
- Record test results, investigate performance exceptions, maintain deficiency logs, verify corrective actions through retesting, and prepare commissioning reports and turnover documentation.
- Coordinate testing across mechanical, electrical, controls, construction, and equipment manufacturer teams while following site safety procedures.
Required qualifications
- At least 2 years of mechanical commissioning experience, with the technical depth and responsibility appropriate to a mid- or senior-level position.
- Hands-on commissioning experience with data center cooling systems or complex liquid distribution and process cooling systems.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, piping diagrams, specifications, test scripts, and controls sequences.
- Experience verifying flow, pressure, temperature, controls, alarms, and equipment response during startup or functional testing.
- Understanding of fluid distribution, heat transfer, and the importance of maintaining cooling availability to critical equipment.
- Strong field troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination skills.
Preferred experience
- Direct commissioning experience with CDUs, direct-to-chip cooling, manifolds, rear-door heat exchangers, or immersion cooling.
- Experience with liquid cooling piping networks, leak detection, water treatment, and BMS integration.
- Direct participation in L3–L5 commissioning or IST on AI, high-performance computing, or hyperscale data center projects.
- Experience developing test procedures and resolving performance deficiencies with equipment manufacturers and design engineers.
Schedule and relocation
Candidates who prefer not to relocate can work a two-week onsite, one-week offsite rotation at the project sites. Relocation assistance is available for candidates interested in moving near a project site.
Benefits
Company benefits include a competitive compensation package, career growth opportunities, performance incentives and bonuses, paid time off, and eligibility to enroll in a 401(k) plan. Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and short-term disability coverage are also available.
