The Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) will report directly to the Data Center Manager and will serve as the premier technical authority, procedural architect, and technical training stakeholder on-site for a mission-critical facility. Operating in partnership with the Critical Facility Lead Engineer (Lead CFE), the SME owns technical standards and procedural architecture (SOP/MOP/EOP), while providing technical guidance on training and qualification requirements for site personnel.

The Electrical SME is engineered around primary focus on Critical Electrical Infrastructure with oversight responsibilities for Mechanical & Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) Systems. The SME oversees complex de-energized switching and isolation (LOTO) evolutions, provide technical mentorship and qualification evaluations to relieve shift-ramp bottlenecks, leads forensic Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), and provides rigorous QA/QC over Principal and Agent third-party subcontractors. The SME will also support the site in building the Reference Library, reviewing SOP/MOP/EOP playbooks, and providing oversight of Qualification Card (Qual Card) technical requirements and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Uncompromising Safety Leadership & AHJ Compliance: Place SAFETY at the top of anything and everything done—without fail. Serve as the site’s primary Electrical Safety technical authority and support the mechanical safety program, enforcing strict compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash protection (NFPA 70E), NEC, IEEE, and OSHA standards across all facility personnel and subcontractors; champion Stop Work Authority (SWA) and oversee safe de-energized switching, isolation, and annual outage evolutions.
  • Electrical Infrastructure: Serve as the foremost on-site technical resource and authority for all Covered Electrical Systems outside the White Space, including Medium and Low Voltage power distribution, switchboards, transformers, static/rotary UPS systems, battery strings, standby diesel generators, fuel systems, VFDs, ATS/STS units, and overhead busways/tap-off boxes up to the output terminals of the branch circuit breaker (Power Handoff Point).
  • Mechanical & Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) Operational Support: Maintain solid working proficiency across the site's mechanical and heat-rejection infrastructure—including chillers, CRAHs, Dedicated Outside Air Systems (DOAS), Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), Facility Water Systems (FWS), PG-25 (25% propylene glycol) chemistry/pH testing, and nitrogen pressurization systems for RMA/warranty shipping—supporting cross-functional procedure development, troubleshooting, and vendor oversight without requiring master-level mechanical trade specialization.
  • Technical Training & Qualification Support: Partner with the Training Team to identify technical training needs, execute qualification requirements, review training materials for technical accuracy, and support development of system one-line walkdown guides and emergency drill playbooks. Partner directly with the Lead CFE to identify and address operator development needs.
  • Operational Readiness & Procedural Governance (SOP/MOP/EOP): Own the technical architecture and lifecycle of the site Reference Library. Author, peer-review, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Method of Procedures (MOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and Emergency Ops Playbooks, incorporating operational feedback from the CFE team to mitigate risk and enforce strict change management compliance.
  • Subcontractor QA/QC & OEM Technical Gatekeeping: Serve as the technical gatekeeper for third-party OEMs and specialty contractors performing licensed, energized, or OEM-restricted maintenance (including IR thermography, primary/secondary breaker injection testing, arc-flash/coordination studies, transformer DGA oil analysis, UPS internal maintenance, and chiller/CDU overhauls). Validate vendor scopes, oversee safe equipment isolation/release and re-energization, and perform QA/QC work acceptance.
  • Grey/White Space Boundary: Partner with the Lead CFE to monitor BMS/EPMS trends, coordinate technical interfaces at the Grey Space / White Space demarcation points, and provide immediate technical expertise during S1–S4 incidents to stabilize critical assets and defend 100% Electrical Availability and DLC/Data Hall Thermal SLAs.
  • Forensic Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Lead forensic Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for electrical and mechanical system faults, power quality disturbances, and cross-functional excursions; compile empirical EPMS/BMS sequence-of-events logs, protective relay targets, and technical evidence to prevent recurrence and substantiate causal-responsibility allocations.
  • Asset Integrity, Drawing Stewardship & Critical Spares: Oversee electrical and mechanical system configuration integrity, validate redline updates to site as-built electrical one-lines and mechanical P&IDs, contribute technical analysis to Monthly KPI/Issues Reports.
  • Schedule & On-Call Requirement: On-Site Day Operations (Monday – Friday) with flexibility to interface across rotational 12-hour shifts and provide 24x7x365 technical escalation support for S1/S2 critical emergencies, commissioning/IST activities, and planned de-energized outage windows.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience: A minimum of 7 to 8+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in electrical operations, maintenance, testing, commissioning, or field service engineering within mission-critical data centers, power generation, utilities, or high-availability industrial environments.
  • Electrical Systems: Expert-level theoretical and practical mastery of medium- and low-voltage power distribution (up to 345kV/13.8kV/480V), switchgear protection and control systems, protective relaying, standby diesel generators, static UPS topologies, battery systems, ATS/STS units, VFDs, overhead busway distribution, and complex electrical one-line/schematic interpretation.
  • Mechanical & D2C Working Knowledge: Solid foundational and operational working knowledge of mission-critical mechanical, cooling, and building automation systems—including chillers, CRAHs, DOAS units, hydronic loops, Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), Facility Water Systems (FWS), closed-loop glycol/water chemistry (PG-25), and fire/life safety interfaces. Must be capable of interpreting mechanical P&IDs/trend charts and authoring operational procedures without requiring specialist mechanical licensure.
  • Technical Training Governance, Procedural & Commercial Acumen: Demonstrated mastery in authoring zero-downtime MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs, identifying technical training requirements, supporting qualification program development, reviewing training content for technical accuracy, establishing objective Qual Card grading rubrics, conducting forensic RCAs, enforcing NFPA 70E/NEC/OSHA standards, and governing third-party OEM vendor scopes within strict Grey/White Space contractual demarcations. Strong proficiency in CMMS platforms, EPMS/BMS telemetry, CAD viewers, and the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and tools, up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders (up to 16 feet) and multiple flights of stairs to access elevated equipment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in various work environments.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform equipment-related maintenance tasks.
  • Basic physical fitness and mobility to move quickly and efficiently within various work environments to troubleshoot issues or respond to emergency situations.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for working with small components, test instruments, and connectors.
  • Clear vision, with or without correction, to perform tasks requiring attention to detail and precision while wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and arc flash gear.
  • Ability to work indoors across a wide variety of temperature zones and outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, or snow.
  • Capability to work in environments with elevated noise levels while wearing required hearing protection.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license for work-related travel, as required.
