A senior opportunity has arisen for an experienced Electronic Systems Architect to join a leading defence organisation, helping shape the design and development of advanced electronic equipment used within complex weapons systems.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of technical architecture across high-performance electronic products, contributing to research and development activities while influencing future engineering strategies and technology roadmaps.

Working closely with engineering leadership, project management teams and customers, you will play a key role in delivering technically challenging solutions within demanding operational environments.

The Role

You will lead the technical development of electronic equipment, ensuring that system architectures meet complex customer requirements while balancing performance, reliability, size and environmental constraints.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Defining electronic and electrical architectures for complex equipment and embedded systems.
  • Breaking down high-level customer requirements into detailed technical requirements for individual subsystems and components.
  • Providing technical leadership across the full equipment development lifecycle.
  • Managing technical risks, design decisions and engineering deliverables to ensure solutions meet agreed cost, quality and delivery objectives.
  • Working closely with Engineering Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams to maintain technical direction.
  • Engaging with customers and internal stakeholders to understand requirements, communicate technical solutions and influence key decisions.
  • Driving engineering improvements and contributing to longer-term technology strategies and roadmaps.

What We're Looking For

Ideally educated to degree level in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline, you will bring significant experience in electronic equipment design and architecture, with knowledge across several of the following areas:

  • Digital electronics and microprocessor-based systems.
  • Power electronics and distributed power architectures.
  • Designing equipment for safety-critical applications.
  • Secure electronic systems and the handling of sensitive customer data.
  • Software and firmware development principles.
  • Compact electronic packaging, thermal management and high-performance equipment design.

Additional experience in areas such as System-on-Chip technologies, RF engineering, signal processing, Software Defined Radio, EMC or environmental engineering would be beneficial.

Strong technical leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills are essential, alongside the confidence to make decisions and influence engineering direction in a demanding environment.

Salary & Benefits

Alongside a salary of circa £70,000, the package includes:

  • Annual bonus of up to 21% of base salary.
  • Pension contributions of up to 14% combined.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including potential part-time options.
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and shared parental leave.
  • Free onsite parking and subsidised meals.
