The role
This is an opportunity to take a leading role in protecting and improving the water environment across Newport, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent. As a Senior Officer in our Environment Team, you'll use your water quality and regulatory expertise to tackle complex environmental issues, support effective decision-making and help deliver more for people, nature and the environment.
You'll lead on water regulation matters within the team, providing trusted technical advice and mentoring colleagues to build their knowledge and confidence. Your work will be varied and fast paced, ranging from investigating environmental incidents and responding to complaints to assessing non-compliance, gathering evidence and identifying the most appropriate regulatory or enforcement response.
Working closely with the Environment Team Leader and fellow Senior Officers, you'll play an important part in planning and delivering the team's work. You'll help shape compliance programmes, contribute to wider work planning and identify opportunities for partnership projects that support local and organisational priorities. You may also lead defined projects or programmes, coordinating people, resources and budgets to achieve successful outcomes.
Collaboration will be central to your role. You'll build productive relationships with colleagues, partner organisations, regulated businesses, stakeholders and members of the public. You'll represent Natural Resources Wales in discussions and meetings, explaining complex issues clearly, influencing others and helping partners find practical solutions to shared environmental challenges.
As part of our responsibilities as a Category 1 responder, you'll also help us prepare for and respond to environmental incidents safely, promptly and effectively. This will include supporting incidents outside normal working hours when required and undertaking appropriate investigation and enforcement activity.
You'll succeed by combining sound technical judgement with the ability to prioritise competing demands, make well-evidenced decisions and remain effective when issues are urgent, complex or contentious. You'll be someone colleagues can rely on for clear advice, while retaining ownership of your own workload and delivering work to a consistently high standard.
The role offers considerable variety and the chance to see the real-world impact of your work. You'll help improve water quality, strengthen regulatory compliance, develop the capability of colleagues and contribute directly to tackling the climate and nature emergencies. For an experienced environmental professional, it is a rewarding opportunity to become a recognised technical lead while influencing meaningful outcomes for communities and the natural environment.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) office at the above location and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment.
Driving is essential for this role. You must hold a full and current UK driving licence, as you will be required to attend environmental incidents and sites across a large geographical area where access by public transport or other means may not be practical or possible.
To make an informal enquiry about this role, please contact Kate Rodgers at Kate.Rodgers@cyfoethnaturiolcymru.gov.uk
Interviews will be face to face the week commencing 02/12/2026 (details of location will be shared in advance)
