Working with model owners, business leaders, Risk Management, Internal Audit and technology partners, the team helps EDC manage model risk while enabling responsible innovation, including the use of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence.
What you will be doing:
As Manager, Model Risk Management, you will lead a team of model risk professionals and oversee independent model validation, governance and reporting activities across EDC. You will provide credible challenge to model development and use, translate regulatory expectations into practical controls, and advise senior stakeholders on model risk, limitations and remediation priorities. Your leadership will strengthen EDC’s model risk practices and support the safe, effective use of models and emerging analytical technologies.
- Lead, coach and develop a team of model risk professionals, setting priorities and maintaining high standards for analytical quality, documentation and timely delivery.
- Plan and oversee independent, risk-based validations and reviews of models across relevant risk and business domains, including credit risk, financial risk, forecasting, pricing, valuation, capital, stress testing and advanced analytics.
- Assess model design, conceptual soundness, data quality, implementation, performance, limitations, controls and ongoing monitoring, and communicate clear conclusions and recommendations.
- Provide effective challenge to model developers, owners and users, and oversee the identification, escalation and timely remediation of model findings and risk acceptances.
- Maintain and enhance model risk policies, standards, procedures, inventory, risk-rating methodologies and management reporting in alignment with EDC’s risk appetite and applicable regulatory expectations.
- Monitor the model risk profile and prepare concise reporting and recommendations for senior management and governance committees.
- Advise stakeholders on model lifecycle requirements, new model use cases, third-party models, artificial intelligence and machine-learning risks, and proportionate governance approaches.
- Build productive relationships across business and control functions, and support regulatory examinations, internal audits and other assurance activities related to model risk.
- Promote continuous improvement through stronger methods, tools, data, automation and knowledge sharing while preserving the independence of the model risk function.
What we are looking for:
- Undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, economics, finance, actuarial science, computer science, engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least seven years of progressive experience in model risk management, model validation, model development, quantitative risk management or a closely related function within a financial institution or regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading people, complex engagements or a portfolio of concurrent model reviews, with accountability for quality, timelines and stakeholder outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of model risk governance and the model lifecycle, including model identification, risk rating, validation, approval, implementation, monitoring, change management and decommissioning.
- Strong quantitative and statistical knowledge, with the ability to assess model methodologies, assumptions, data, implementation and performance across a range of model types.
- Knowledge of Canadian financial-sector regulatory expectations and industry practices relating to model risk management, including OSFI Guideline E-23 and related governance, data and technology-risk considerations.
- Excellent judgment, critical thinking and written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues and influence senior stakeholders.
- Ability to establish constructive relationships while maintaining independence, objectivity and effective challenge.
- Bilingual in both official languages (English and French), at the proficiency level required for an EDC leader role.
What will make you stand out:
- Graduate degree in a quantitative or business discipline.
- Professional designation such as CFA, FRM, PRM, CPA or an actuarial designation.
- Experience with credit-risk models, including probability of default, loss given default and exposure at default; IFRS 9 expected credit loss; stress testing; economic capital; valuation; forecasting; or pricing models.
- Experience assessing artificial intelligence, machine-learning, generative AI or third-party models and the related explainability, fairness, data, performance and governance risks.
- Hands-on proficiency with analytical tools or programming languages such as Python, R, SAS, SQL or comparable technologies.
- Experience improving model governance frameworks, implementing regulatory change, or leading process, data or technology transformation within a model risk function.
