About Us

Diamond Light Source is one of the world’s most advanced scientific facilities. We’re home to the UK’s synchrotron light source – a giant microscope producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Probing the structure and composition of matter, our work drives innovation in everything from vaccines to nanotech.

At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Technician to join the Engineering Group on a 3-year fixed-term contract.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will support the assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and upgrade of mechanical systems associated with Diamond’s accelerators and front ends, including equipment being delivered as part of the Diamond-II programme.

Responsibilities Will Include

  • Assembling, installing and modifying precision mechanical components and systems in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications and procedures.
  • Carrying out inspection, dimensional checks and acceptance testing of mechanical components and subsystems.
  • Manufacturing and modifying components using manual and, where appropriate, CNC machine tools.

  • Working collaboratively with engineers, technicians, suppliers and other technical groups.
  • Operating site transport and lifting equipment, including tugs, trailers and forklift trucks, following appropriate training and authorisation.

Some flexibility in working hours will be required during periods of installation, shutdown or commissioning activity. Occasional local travel may also be required.

About You

You will have completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship or hold a relevant engineering qualification, such as an ONC, Level 2/3 engineering qualification or equivalent. Applicants with equivalent relevant practical engineering experience will also be considered.

You Will Have Practical Experience And The Ability To

  • Read, understand and work from mechanical engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Manufacture or modify components accurately from engineering drawings using workshop equipment.
  • Use common engineering hand tools, measuring equipment and workshop machinery safely and effectively.
  • Carry out precision mechanical assembly and fitting activities.
  • Undertake a range of mechanical and light electrical assembly tasks.
  • Work methodically and safely within engineering workshop, laboratory and operational environments.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Ultra-high-vacuum equipment and systems.
  • Cryogenic equipment.
  • Permanent magnet systems.
  • Small-bore stainless-steel tube fitting systems, such as Swagelok.
  • Cooling-water and mechanical-services pipework.
  • High-pressure gas or hydraulic systems.
