About the Position

Medical Directors at Southcentral Foundation (SCF) are practicing family medicine physicians who care for a consistent, smaller panel of customer-owners while also providing clinical leadership within a Primary Care clinic. Physicians build long-term relationships with customer-owners and families and work with them to make care decisions based on their individual needs, goals, and values. As an Alaska Native-owned, nonprofit healthcare organization, SCF’s Nuka System of Care is grounded in customer-ownership and Shared Responsibility, with customer-owners taking an active role in decisions about their health and care.

Physicians practice within an integrated care team that includes a full-time RN case manager, certified medical assistant, and case management support. Teams also have ready access to behavioral health consultants, pharmacists, dietitians, certified nurse midwives, pediatric providers, psychiatry, pain consultation, and other integrated clinical resources. This structure supports continuity, shared clinical responsibility, and coordinated whole-person care without placing every aspect of the customer-owner’s care on a single clinician.

The Medical Director’s smaller panel provides time to lead and develop the clinic’s panel providers and Team Coverage providers. Working closely with the Clinic Manager and Senior RN Case Manager, the Medical Director brings the physician perspective into clinic decisions while setting and reinforcing provider expectations and clinical practice standards and leading work related to quality and safety, population health, care-team performance, and provider onboarding. The role is equally focused on people: building a strong provider culture through regular 1:1s, mentoring, clinical feedback, professional development, thoughtful performance conversations, and development of future clinical leaders. Formal supervisory and operational responsibilities are carried in partnership with the Clinic Manager, allowing the Medical Director to remain focused on clinical leadership and the performance and development of the provider team.

Medical Directors are part of a broader Primary Care physician leadership community, working alongside eight other Medical Directors under the leadership of the Service Line Medical Director. They contribute to division and organizational initiatives and are supported through formal leadership development, mentorship, and experienced clinical and operational partners. The role is designed to support both established physician leaders and physicians ready to take on their first formal leadership opportunity.

The practice model is structured to support the time and relationships this work requires. Physicians are not compensated based on customer-owner visit volume, creating space for thoughtful clinical decision-making, shared conversations about care, and attention to the broader factors affecting health.

As a Medical Director at SCF, you can expect:

  • A smaller, consistent panel of customer-owners with time to fulfill clinical leadership responsibilities
  • A dedicated integrated care team with RN case management, certified medical assistant, and case management support
  • The opportunity to coach and develop a small provider team while shaping clinical quality, standards, and provider culture
  • Close partnership with clinic nursing and operational leadership, along with a peer community of Primary Care Medical Directors
  • Compensation that is not based on customer-owner visit volume
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • A predictable outpatient schedule, primarily Monday–Friday, with one evening clinic per week and occasional Saturday coverage
  • Ready access to integrated clinical services, specialty care, an on-site pharmacy, and a comprehensive formulary
  • Formal leadership development and mentorship to support continued growth as a physician leader

For physicians who want to continue practicing meaningful, relationship-based family medicine while helping create the clinical standards, provider culture, and team environment that allow others to practice it well, the Medical Director role offers the opportunity to influence both individual care and the broader experience of care at SCF.
