Lead safety analyses, including FMEDA, FTA, HAZOP, and STPA, as appropriate to the system and deployment.
Drive the first CE marking under EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, working with the relevant conformity assessment and certification partners.
Define safety goals, functional and technical safety requirements, and the evidence and traceability supporting the safety argument.
Work closely with software and embedded engineers to translate functional safety requirements into design, verification, and validation activities
Act as the technical point of contact for functional safety discussions with customers, integrators, and regulators.
what we look for
Must have
At least six years of functional safety engineering experience, including successful delivery of at least one SIL 2 / PL d program.
Strong working knowledge of IEC 61508 (SIL determination and lifecycle) and ISO 13849 (PL d, categories, DC, MTTFd, CCF).
Working knowledge of IEC 62998, EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 conformity assessment, and relevant robotics standards.
Hands-on experience developing safety goals, requirements, risk analyses, traceability, and safety-case evidence throughout the product lifecycle.
Practical experience with functional safety analysis or requirements tools, such as Sistema, Ansys medini analyze, ISOGraph, Polarion, DOORS, LDRA, or Vector.
Ability to work independently in a fast-moving environment, solve unfamiliar problems, challenge assumptions constructively, and make pragmatic technical decisions.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across engineering teams, customers, and external certification bodies, translating complex safety requirements into practical engineering solutions.
Preferable skills
Experience delivering perception-based safety functions certified to SIL 2 or PL d.
Experience developing and documenting safety cases using Claims-Arguments-Evidence (CAE) or Goal Structuring Notation (GSN).
Experience integrating ISO 26262 (ASIL) with IEC 61508 / ISO 13849 (SIL / PL d) within the same system architecture.
Practical experience with SOTIF (ISO 21448) and ISO/PAS 8800 (AI safety).
Contributions to relevant standards working groups, such as ISO TC 299, IEC TC 44, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, or UL 4600.
Bonus
Direct experience working with a notified body or certification body.
what we offer
Join coera at a defining stage, where your technical decisions will directly shape the product, its architecture, and the engineering team that grows around it. You'll work closely with the founders, have genuine ownership of critical technology, and see your work progress from development through certification to real-world deployment with robotics partners.
how we work
Small, senior, deliberate. We write more than we meet, challenge ideas openly, and focus on building what matters. We value engineers who take ownership, make sound technical decisions, and are comfortable navigating ambiguity. We care about engineering quality, but we're equally committed to pragmatic solutions and getting things done.
process and small print
Location
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Berlin. We're a small team building complex, safety-critical technology, and we believe working closely together makes a real difference at this stage. Being in the same room helps us solve problems faster, exchange ideas, and make important technical decisions together.
Our hiring process
We aim to keep our process thoughtful, transparent, and focused on getting to know each other. It includes an introductory conversation, a technical interview, a take-home assignment followed by a presentation and discussion, and a final conversation with the founders.
Visa & relocation
Not based in Berlin yet? We'd still love to hear from you. For the right candidate, we're open to discussing visa sponsorship and relocation support on an individual basis.
